I am sorry I must be the only but I Couldn't stand James Woods.

Well his acting persona is oftentimes designed in a way that he is supposed to play the upbeat and sometimes quirky or zany sort of assh#le. But he's not that in every film. To simply write him off as a "dick" would be incredibly belittling for someone who brings quite a degree of precision and sophistication to the assh#le type of character that few others bring. He brings it rather distinctly and with style. Think of how much fun we have watching Billy Zane as the villain in Demon Knight. Only difference is, Woods's zany villainous behavior is slightly "smug," as you put it, and delightfully so.

You didn't actually expect to like the villain do you? They're supposed to be unlikable, although in this case Woods actually played a one who was both unlikable and yet a bit likable at the same time.

If you'd like to see a fantastic film starring Woods in which he plays a different sort of character with a different sort of motive, I would highly recommend Indictment. It's a superb film with another dynamite performance from James Woods. But the film is stunning. I would also ask you not to read up on it any before viewing. Just find it, press "Play," and enjoy.
