why is this movie labelled "comedy" and "shockingly funny"?
Where are the funny parts?

I thought the same thing. A lot of this movie was just gut-wrenching. The father, for example. I wanted to reach into the movie and crack him in the mouth. The mother was a POS too. When he did the thing with the belt, I almost panicked, because I didn't want him to die. Very depressing, I thought.

They probably bill it as a comedy, because when it first came out, all anyone ever talked about was the incest. I just saw it for the first time today, and I had no desire to see it--was even sickened by the thought--but it was on IFC so I figured I'd check it out. I do remember it got pretty great reviews, and I was curious how they'd portray incest in a "funny" way, and so a way that would actually get good reviews.

I think it was a pretty good movie, though I think if they would have left the incest out, they woulda still gotten the point across. Hey! Good idea for a new thread.

Without the incest, the movie would have had not real plot line except "Son is forced to take care of his overbearing mother since dad has left on business". Not much of a movie 'eh?

The whole point of the movie was a Oedipus complex portrayed.

What did you see with the incest scenes that was so instrumental to the plot? I think the movie had a great plot line w/o the incest..."son forced to take care of his overbearing mother...." Psycho, Willard, etc. And look at the father's character. Very well done, I hated that bastard. (And the actor who played Raymond was fantastic.)

His mother was controlling and overbearing, and I think that is enough. The incest seemed (to me) to be added just to add controversy. I mean, ask anyone, and they'll reply "Isn't that the one where the son f's his mother?" If the incest wasn't in this, it would probably have been completely ignored. By putting it in there, they were able to get peoples' attention.

Which is a shame, because I really liked the movie, but had their been no incest (and no infamy), I would never have remembered it fifteen years after it got all those reviews.

Without the incest, it would have been like Revolutionary Road only without Mom and son being married.

It's a dark comedy. Horrible things happening to this young man, and he continues to try to push for normalcy. What his parents were putting him through was so over-the-top that I thought it was funny. Not silly, but just ridiculous.
