Top Gun Monologue
Tarantino stole that from Avary. Avary was writing it for his own work, and Tarantino used the bit by Avary without permission or the knowledge of Avary.
Eric Stotlz had to tell Avary about it.
Avary was really pissed.

Swordfight!!!!
"It doesn't feel right to shoot an unarmed man... but I'll get over it."
QT stealing something and putting it in his won film. Surely not?
shareIt's a great little monologue, but it's spoiled by the fact that Iceman does not say "you can ride my tail." He says you can "be my wingman."

Isn't he cleverly alluding to an earlier, more innocuous mention of a wingman "riding tail," suggesting that the established metonymic interchangability of wingman with "riding tail" in the final scene unlocks the subtext of the writer's allegorical intent? In other words, QT misquotes it on purpose to this effect. Don't you think his approach of being subversive to point out the subversive is more fun than the way I have explained it? It's never as funny if someone has to explain it to you, is it? That is to say, you got the cheap "gay joke" of his funny rant, but kind of missed the point of him telling that story about Top Gun in the first place...let alone talking about subversion in scripts within a scripted scene: "subversion on a massive scale."
shareI agree, it doesn't matter if QT said "ride my tail" as opposed to "be my wingman" it is said for dramatic and comedic effect. Besides most people wouldn't remember the exact quote anyways.

The "Top Gun Conversation" is the only thing that makes this forgettable film worth seeing...but fast forward it to that part and save yourself some time.
