I have never got it...

I have never got the raves for this movie, and I don't think I ever will.

I even watched it twice, to see what the fuss was all about. Nothing. Just a bland prison movie with more than a few implausible elements, and a ridiculously whimsical plot.

A fantasy for nerds who are terrified of getting into trouble and going to jail.

Same reason why Paddington 2 is popular. It's an accessible fun movie that basically everyone can enjoy outside of a few grouchy individuals.

You have a great sense of humour.

I think people like it because the message is one of hope..

It's just gratifying to see someone that finds themselves trapped in a hellish nightmare keep pressing on to that light at the end of the tunnel.
It's just touching...and cathartic.

Well, that might make it at least a watchable movie, bohemain, but it doesn't explain the inordinate enthusiasm that fans seem to feel for it.

Anyway, to each his own, I suppose.

reply

First of all it has a good cast and, to some of us, an interesting story to tell..
But as far as their enthusiasm not being explained ..
Sure it does. It makes them feel good.
Don't you especially like things that do that for you?

reply

Yes, lots of movies do that for me. And no doubt they do for others. But still, I think it's curious that this particular film is so revered almost, when plenty of better films which have the same effect, aren't.

I like Shawshank Redemption but frankly I do get you in some ways. Personally I think Sin City is a bad film and I don't get why so many people like it so much. And it used to be in the imdb top 250. Even now it still gets close to an 8 on imdb. Frankly though I don't really like Frank Miller's work outside Daredevil and Robocop Vs. The Terminator.

reply

It's worth seeing, once. But not anything special.

reply

"But not anything special.

That's how I would put it, too, Lisa.

Although, I've seen it twice. That is, one and a half times. After I began to see all the puzzling enthusiasm for it on this forum, I decided to watch it again, thinking I must have missed something.

But no, it was just another overly sentimental adaptation of a Stephen King jail story, and I turned it off halfway through.

Popcorny, STFU.

And Foobane, you can GAGF, SIUYR, FADD, ESYB.

Not to mention, EIEIO, SYOM, GEDIY, SMC, and YABBADABBADOO.

The SSR is CRAP.

It’s a great movie that has been ruined by film school students and casuals looking for hipster cred. Basically it’s been so commercialized at this point it’s lost some of its importance.

reply

Best movie ever made. Period.

reply

it's okay that you don't get it. I never understood the appeal of the movie "Some Like It Hot". It is considered the best comedy ever made by the American Film Institute, and I think "Young Frankenstein" is much funnier.
But, I consider this film to be masterpiece of human drama. Perfect? No, no film is really perfect, but it is pretty close.
