Kick Ass Zombie Flick

Although the rating doesn't look it this is actually a really cool indie zombie film. It took me ten years to track down a copy for my collection but I got it.Any fans out there. I would like to hear your likes and dislikes.

I'm also a huge fan of the movie, and think it's very unfairly maligned for trying to do something new and unique with the genre. People are quick to criticize its budgetary shortcomings, but few point out how great the writing is.

People also come down too hard on Stark, who I think did a great job. Naysayers accuse her of not "emoting" enough, but how much exactly did Clint Eastwood emote in HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER? I took Stark's deadpan approach as a conscious acting choice, and a good one at that.

Anyway, them's my two cents.

It is by far one of the worst films I have ever seen. And I don't throw that phrase around lightly.

But I'm not about to just trash it without reason. I felt the premise was laudable. Not pioneering by any means, but pretty against type for a zombie film. It had some potential and in the right hands could have been a good film. Or even a great one. But there were just too many things going against it. The acting was unforgivable, the direction minimal at best and there were a couple of sick, sleazy conventions of Z-grade horror thrown in which blunted any possibility of it elevating itself beyond DIY backyard brand shock-horror.

In summation, I thought it was bullsh!t. Sorry.

I admire Shatter Dead immensely for its uncompromising vision and willingness to take things to the extreme. It often felt like the evil twin of a home-made porno movie. It's one of the very, very few movies that's unafraid to get as extreme as some of the more extreme and dark horror fiction.

I don't really enjoy it very much, though. The technical shortcomings are a wee bit too much for me to suspend disbelief, and the acting is quite painful. If McCrae could scrape up enough money to hire a decent crew and some actors, he might be on to something.

The problem is obviously that McCrae's vision is so extreme that any investment from any quarters would be bound to come with a requirement for compromise.

But that's basically it for me: easy to admire, hard to enjoy.

i purchased this DVD at Hollywood Video for a buy two get two free, this was one of the 4, and i put it in not knowing what to expect... except that i knew it had gore, which is good for me. So after watching it i loved the idea of the dead being a cult, and many wanting to enjoy... i think it was a great idea for a film, with some unexpected XXX porn, a whole lot of bush, and an overall unique experience, dont take the acting and lack of budget into your judgement of the movie, just follow the story, and appreciate how the director is getting his message across with a budget like this

Just finished watching Chad Ferrin's "The Ghouls" and after reading some nasty talk about its quality I wanted to see what people were saying about Shatter Dead. I saw Shatter Dead ten years ago and I remember making a bootleg of the video to show my college friends. Sorry Scooter! Rented it at Heads Together in Squirrel Hill in Pittsburgh and thought to myself, we could have made this!! Best way to enjoy this is to pretend a good friend made it for you to watch.

I love the comment above, looks like it was filmed with my cell phone... it does! Awful production, probably why I felt free to duplicate it for myself. It seemed like a third- and fourth-hand copy anyway.

I love the trunkful of guns, most of which are cap guns or pellet guns. Only one real gun in the movie, and I'm pretty sure no actual guns were fired in the making of this movie. Something similar in El Mariachi, during the scene in the beginning where the same guns appear on both sides of a gunfight, inside of Azul's prison cell and also in the hands of his would-be assassins.

And yeah, all that bush, and the am-I-really-seeing-this gun sex at the end. Not sexy.

Anyone who doesn't want their copy, send it to me. I'll watch it again.

While I am highly interested in low budget zombie films, one of my favs. being The Dead Next Door, i still couldnt enjoy this film. First of all, Scooter, you should ease down the sleaze. Is this a college porn or a zombie think piece. I wont get into the bad acting because we all know that should not be judged in zombie films and shouldnt even be an issue. However, I do believe this film is valuable for it's amazing ideas. With some of these zombie ideas to consider, this film had some of the best ideas since Night of the Living Dead. However, some things were too far out there. like the angel of death sex scene. Unneeded. The gun sex scene. Not completely unneeded because it was interesting, but should not have been shown in graphic detail. Plus the whole feel of this movie just didnt sit right. Its like Scooter took a whole bunch of ideas and just built a movie around it, throwing the ideas in there but then just letting the film wander. It some areas it was filming for filmings sake. And it was almost like the great ideas were rushed to the film when they should have been carefully planned and thought out.
I think someone should borrow the ideas from this film and make a slightly bigger budgeted (we can hope for a huge budget too) movie with less sleaze and more direction. A film where the good ideas are not wasted and are thought out and carefully executed.

Im a little bit curious... The shown plot keywords for this movie are...

Gun In Vagina / Zombie / Independent Film / Cult Favorite / Psychotronic

WHAT? Gun in Vagina? Its really weird to see that... So, why there is such a plot keyword for this movie?

reply

Well to explain the 'gun in vagina' scene would require
possible spoilers.

**Spoiler Alert**

After the lead actress returns home to find out that her boyfriend
killed himself and become one of the walking desd. Since his member
is flaccid and unusable she straps a gun to his privates and solves
the problem.

**End Spoilers**

Just another exmple of how nutty this film is.

This is one of the greatest shot on video films ever made. It has scope, ambition and was very original. It's not perfect, but I have seen movies made for millions that were far inferior. If you are open to micro budget indy, you will enjoy. If you hate low budget fare, avoid.

What the hell are you talking about? It's one of the worst film I know (I can't name any worse movie now, but maybe there is). It's not even enjoyably bad, it's just REALLY bad in a bad way. I'd make a better movie. Seriously. I'd call my ASG pals and we would do some half-assed war drama on photo camera posted on YouTube and this would be better.
