Danny Boyle apparently thought that most audience members don't invest much into movie characters anyway. It's only the intellectuals who appreciate well-built characters.

I agree with you, its as if saying that audiences can only appreciate films that are only for entertainment. Although there are some film audiences who seek out films for this purpose, there are others who enjoy well-written characters.
As for
Shallow Grave, its not entirely true that the main protagonists are unsympathetic from beginning to end. David struggles with his morality over the decision until he turns psychotic and Juliet goes from confidence to nervousness when the police begin to suspect them. Therefore
Shallow Grave contains enough characterisation for audiences to ponder various themes.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.
