No, camp and humor are not synonyms. There is not a scintilla of camp in this film. “Camp” is a 1960s word, meaning “spoof,” or to use a phrase from that decade, “a put-on.” SolarSailer, please don’t use words whose meaning you do not know. The Shadow is set in an older era. Period. So is Raiders of the Lost Arc, ALSO not camp! So was the series Spartacus. ALSO not camp. The 60s TV series, Batman, was camp. Dig up some episodes of Adam West as Batman, then watch Alec Baldwin as The Shadow. It’s like the difference between watching Jackass and Masterpiece Theater. Sheesh! And, like so many of you here who have an actual brain, I like this movie a lot. And, yeah, to me, The Shadow is better than the overproduced, underthought, “humor”-for-a-9-year-old-driven narratives that have made me scorn Stan Lee(bowicz) for decades. Hey! Stan! Fuck New York! Yes, there is. Look no further than the characters played by Tim Curry, Ian McKellen and John Lone, especially Curry. Sure, the camp isn't anywhere near as over-the-top as the 60's Batman TV show, but it's still fairly glaring comic book camp (not to be confused with typical humor).
While I liked the movie, it would've been better if they removed the campy elements and shot for the more serious, darker air of the future "Batman Begins" (2005).
