Reading in the Dark: Using The Secret of Roan Inish in English Classes

I teach 6th grade English/Literature, and show The Secret of Roan Inish to my class every year. It is used for the students' first five-paragraph persuasive essay in my class. The students study cinematographic terms, and then they look for lighting, camera angles, sound, and the use of flashbacks in the film. The students love the film, which most have never seen before, and it helps lessen the "blow" of the big writing assignment.

What does "reading in the dark" mean? Is that a way you refer to movies in your English class?

"Reading in the Dark: Using Film As a Tool in the English Classroom" is a book by John Golden. Movies are literature presented in another form that adds camera angles, lighting, and sound to plot structure and character development.
