Why Mets players?

As I said in another post i enjoyed this movie, but never understood why they used Keith Hernandez and Bret Saberhagen, as the players for Steve to hit and pitch against. Why couldn't they cast Don Mattingly or Jimmy Key for those roles? Keith Hernandez was retired and Saberhagen was pitching for the Mets when the movie was filmed. I never understood that.
