Available in widescreen?

I've only been able to find 4x3 versions of this movie. Does a widescreen version exist or has it only ever been released in 4x3?

reply

So far no widescreen transfer has been made available on any home video format. All releases going back to the VHS and Laserdisc were 4:3, that goes for both Scanner Cop and Scanner Cop II.

It is quite possible they composed it with 1.85:1 in mind and one can get a decent framing by zooming it on ones TV, suggesting the DVDs are open matte transfers. I tested it briefly a few years ago and what I saw looked OK, but it has been a while.

It's possible that this and Scanner Cop 2: The Showdown do exist in widescreen form since we did get widescreen versions of Scanners II: The New Order and Scanners III: The Takeover this year.

Maybe, just maybe Lionsgate will be okay with licensing the two Scanner Cop movies to Shout Factory in the next year or so.

I warned you not to go out tonight

Scanners 2 and 3 have been available in widescreen for quite some time already pretty much everywhere, though the US seem to have fallen behind getting those on home video releases until Scream put them out.

In the case of the two Scanner Cop films I think these will require new scans as I doubt any widescreen transfers exist.

The rights to this one and Scanner Cop 2 are actually with Republic Pictures. Lionsgate did control the Republic catalog at one point, but their control of the Republic catalog is now a thing of the past. However, with Olive Films releasing some of Republic's B output such as Ticks and the second Night of the Demons movie, I'd say that chances of Olive possibly releasing restored versions of the two Scanner Cop movies look pretty good.
