I believe it's a TV show. It's not real life. I guess they can do what they want on TV.

reply

Perhaps everyone turned a blind eye because it was a celebration. Also if its a private party would an age restriction apply?

if u seen all of saved by the bell u know that Zack always gets his way

It's a wedding, and it's Vegas. and also who is to say it was champane? I think they learned their lesson about drinking when they wrecked the car.

reply

Surprised everyone has missed the obvious. This is after the College years. So they're probably 21 by the time of this movie.

reply

It is after the college years, but at the beginning, Zach's mom I think does mention that it's foolish to get married at 19 or some such.

That being said, if you were the cop patrolling the area, and saw Zach and Kelly drinking, would YOU stop them? I sure wouldn't.

W000, c'mon reunion show!

reply

True because they were like 20 - 21 in their real age..... Born 1974 collge years ended in 1994 so the movie was in 95?

reply

Yes, his mom metions in the movie about his age. She is referring to Zack's dad not agreeing with the wedding. She says, "Zack, your dad has big plans for you, and getting married at 19 is not on his list."

But in real life they were older. Probably at least 21.

I agree totaly with the reunion show idea!!!!

reply

also, i do believe that even if they were underage at the time, in certain states and countries parents can give written permission so they can legally drink for whenever is needed. They did this when our school went to europe and we were underage and taking a tour of a wine factory

reply

ha in real life they're like 30 i think lol.

reply

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. You don't need legal written permission in Europe because you are of legal age there. The reason you had to have permission was because the school was trying to cover it's ass, but in reality it's still not needed.

Also, you don't need written permission to have alcohol when your parents are present - and both Zach and Kelly's parents were there. It was their wedding, not a big deal. When my friend got married at 19, she had a glass of champagne at her wedding.

reply

Um, no. Regardless of the celebration and regardless of who is present (and how they feel about it), it is still illegal for someone under 21 to drink. That's like saying, "It's cool that I break the law because my parents said it was okay." That being said, it really isn't a big deal, but it is illegal.

reply

Um, no. If you want to get into that issue it depends on the state you are in: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_drinking_age#Americas (and there are sources provided for all of that). Drinking when you are under 21 in a private setting is not illegal in every state (read: when a legal guardian is present, like sayyyy YOUR WEDDING.)

reply

on TV there is constant underage drinking AKA Gossip Girl. But it may not have been Champagne. It could have been Sparkling Cider

reply

Also, when they were talking to Alex at the reception, someone said something to the affect of being right across campus. Meaning they were still in college. Not to say that has any real meaning. I'm 23 and still in college...

reply

Because the legal drinking age used to be 18. Not sure what year, but you can look it up..... and i think the wedding is when you can drink under 21 anyway. I know that if you marry someone over 21 and your under that they are considered your legal guardian and can buy it for you

reply

That was in the late 80s. In 88/89 is when the legal drinking age changed to 21, so this doesn't apply here.

reply

No, the drinking age was changed to 21 in 1987 because of some highway act and mother's against drunk driving or MADD. MADD mading me MAD because of their stupid idea. I say if your old enough to figh a war, you should be old enough to drink.

Seriously? Geez, is this an idiot convention? If you buy alcohol for someone under 21, you GO TO JAIL. It's a crime. Damn people.

reply

I'm sure the drinking age is still 21 - but it was a private celebration. If their parents didn't really object and they weren't getting drunk, I doubt any police would have stopped it.

First and foremost, due to the size of the glass and the amount of liquid in the glass, the lack of any Champagne bottles, it's hard to believe that they are actually drinking Champagne. Though it is not uncommon for people of all ages to raise a glass of Champagne, and toast during a celebration.

However, there is also this...

"The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 required all states to raise their minimum purchase and public possession of alcohol age to 21. States that did not comply faced a reduction in highway funds under the Federal Highway Aid Act.... It does not prohibit persons under 21 (also called youth or minors) from drinking. The term "public possession" is strictly defined and does not apply to possession for the following:

* An established religious purpose, when accompanied by a parent, spouse or legal guardian age 21 or older
* Medical purposes when prescribed or administered by a licensed physician, pharmacist, dentist, nurse, hospital or medical institution
* In private clubs or establishments
* In the course of lawful employment by a duly licensed manufacturer, wholesaler or retailer.” 1

Many of the states that have chosen to specifically prohibit alcohol consumption by those under age 21 have a variety of exceptions. For example,

Some States allow an exception for consumption when a family member consents and/or is present. States vary widely in terms of which relatives may consent or must be present for this exception to apply and in what circumstances the exception applies. Sometimes a reference is made simply to "family" or "family member" without further elaboration.

Some States allow an exception for consumption on private property. States vary in the extent of the private property exception which may extend to all private locations, private residences only, or in the home of a parent or guardian only. In some jurisdictions, the location exception is conditional on the presence and/or consent of the parent, legal guardian, or legal-age spouse.

Some States also allow exceptions for educational purposes (e.g., students in culinary schools), religious purposes (e.g., sacramental use of alcoholic beverages), or medical purposes."
