Media Coverage

Could you imagine the media coverage that would have occurred during the police hunt for Scott after he “kidnapped” Charlie! The headlines would be like “Man believes he’s Santa Claus, kidnaps son.” There would be expert psychologists giving their input into the psychological and physical changes Scott goes through and there would be interviews with Scott’s coworkers and family talking about the incident. Would have been another great aspect to explore with the film!

It was Christmas Eve. Newspapers for Christmas Day distribution were already printed and local TV stations would be on skeleton crew that would be recalled in a state or national emergency. A upper middle class custody dispute doesn't reach that level. It was also over and done with within a few hours. If this went on through the 26th there would be coverage but I don't know how significant.

Wasn’t it Thanksgiving when Scott “kidnaps” Charlie?

Huh, now you've got me wondering. I seem to recall it was Christmas Eve but I also recall the elves talking about Charlie's help in making improvements to Santa's sleigh, so he would have needed more time. Maybe it was Thanksgiving.
