Morbid future

At the end when Neil tells the kid he'll makea great psychiatrist and the kid replies, "no thanks, I think I'm going to go into the family business" is really messed up. Doesn't he realizes there is only one Santa, his dad, and to become the new Santa you have to kill the other!?! The kid is going to kill the father to take over the family business!!!!!

Great holiday message

Settle down. You'll hurt your thinker.

I believe Dr. Seuss would say he would hurt his "puzzler" instead of thinker (being Christmas themed), but yeah...

Maybe it's like a monarchy; when a king or queen dies, their firstborn takes over.

But Santa is immortal to natural death...he must be overthrown

reply

Orrrr he could've been implying that he wanted to join the elvesZ

reply

Yea, he could have just meant working at the North Pole. That doesn't mean he HAS to be Santa. There are lots of other jobs to do and he could even see an unmet need and come up with a new job.

Most likely when his dad dies of old age, Charlie would take over.

This topic reminds me of Simba wanting to be king and the interpretation of "I just can't wait until dad dies".

Well, as we found out in the sequel, it appears Charlie wasn't quite on his way to taking up his father's trade. Things changed over the years. I think he probably changed his mind as he got older, and it wouldn't be a big tragedy to his dad anyway. But I have extreme doubts about Charlie becoming a psychiatrist when he grew up, so Neil's dream was shot too.
