This movie is a bad adaptation of a good book

SFW is not a bad movie, in my opinion. I like it, and I even read the book because I like it. However, upon reading the book (a few years ago), I lost some respect for the movie. It totally missed the point of the book. Either that, or the filmakers changed it deliberately.

The book isn't a sendup of fame and pop culture, like the movie is. Sure, it does have some aspects of that to it, but the book has a lot more to offer than that. I see SFW (the book) as sort of a modernized Cather in the Rye. It's a story about a person who has trouble seeing the value of the society he's part of, and how he deals with that. In the book, Spab isn't an angry, rebellious burnout, like in the movie; he's a deeply troubled person who is having a hard time finding his place in the world.

In addition to changing Spab's character, the movie also changes Wendy, Stacy (or Janet, as she's known in the movie), and a few other characters. That's in addition to omitting a few chracters as well, like Frank Dice, who's very important in the book. Aside from the characters, the movie also moves events around, omits important plot points, and even drastically changes the ending.

If you've seen this movie, I recommend you read the book, it's a lot better than the movie. I like it a lot, and I might even consider it one of my favorite books. I'd actually like to see a good adaptation of the book made, but I know that's probably not going to happen.

The movie was very typical of the early-90s.

Alternative music was cool, so MTV and every other corporation shoved "Generation X"-inspired alternacrap down the public's throat.

We needed to have a cool anti-hero... etc etc. Very cliche.

But it's still interesting to watch if you were a pre-teen during that time to see how badly over-exploited the whole "alternative rock" thing was at the time. I saw it on Showtime last night when I was trying to fall asleep.

Totally agree. Gen Xploitation. It had become a marketing scheme. No wonder Cobain couldn't take it anymore.

I'll take Punctuality

People who read the book are always so condescending. You know what I liked about the movie it only took 1 and half hours of my life to see it.

FAIL.

Debt and debt and debt and debt and debt and then All will be enslaved.

True, time is short for all of us. But rarely is a movie as satisfying as a book.

I didn't know there even was a book.

I have not seen the movie yet, but I found an old copy of the book on Amazon last week and when I got it I read it straight through in about an hour.

I was kind of underwhelmed by the book.

But considering you can find a copy for 40 cents and it's so short I'd say it's worth checking out just for the novelty.

The back story behind the book is much more interesting to me.
