I have to wonder if this role wasn't originally written for Beth Davenport - Gretchen Corbett, and they cast Joanna Cassidy instead because she might still have been upset for being let go during the original series.

Gretchen Corbett cut her own throat by asking for too much money, so she was written out of the series. If Jim didn't have an ex by the time he was sixty, folks would have wondered if he was a Peter Pan type who couldn't commit. Fans almost universally hated Joanna Cassidy, but she was in a thankless part. We fans would be rooting for Jim, and she wouldn't have been seen kindly.
