6.2 is asinine

I can find no fault with this movie, and certainly nothing that would result with that miserable rating. The River Wild accomplishes everything it sets out to do...it's a thrilling adventure with great acting from a distinguished cast, the perfect amount of suspense, and breathtaking wilderness scenery. It's cracking entertainment from the always-reliable Curtis Hanson.

I try not to invest any sort of meaning of IMDb ratings, but I take umbrage with a 6.2. This deserves to sit comfortably in the 7.1-7.2 range.

Kudos to all involved for creating a memorable film that serves as a nostalgic reminder of the days when good old-fashioned storytelling and craftsmanship trumped CGI.

I agree. I've seen worse movies and this ain't one of them, especially for a 6.2. It could be better, I'm givin' it on-the-dot of a seven.

I agree! I gave it a 7. It's a fantastically acted movie all around.

The reason I didn't give it higher is because it didn't all the elements I enjoy in a movie.

It's a great family thriller though!

reply

It was far too predictable and both Streep and Bacon put in half-assed performances.

Agree 6.2 is too low for this movie, I personally rate it as a 7.5 but expected it to be comfortably in the 7s

I started at an 8, but I would settle on a low 7. I get the 6.2 though.

It just gets too repetitive. The bad guys are revealed as bad too soon, and then the whole thing just follows a formula. It's just the family trying to escape, then the two thieves narrowly prevent their escape. Then they raft under duress for a while before another escape attempt.

I would've liked it if they didn't telegraph Terry/Wade as villains so early. There should've been a slow build-up that something wasn't right, but instead it didn't even attempt subtlety. From the very start from that first interaction between Streep/Bacon you know he's up to something and then you're stuck waiting for him to reveal his true colors. A little ambiguity would've been nice instead of such clearly marked good guys and bad guys.

I love this film. 6.2 seems low to me. I'd give it an 8.

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

Yeah, I give it a 7 too.

You have to look at it with respect to the average rating of films on the site. Maybe 6.2 is a bit lower than the average score for a bigger-budget film with major stars in it, but the bottom films in the Top 250 of all time only have an 8.0. There are probably not more than a thousand films or so with a lot of ratings that are rated a 7.2 or higher.
