Accident

Really enjoyed this film, caught it very late at night and missed the first part.

What was the accident that caused the little boy's death?

Thanks

He had had a bad dream, and wanted his wooden pull-toy horse to sleep with him. Marlo gave it to him, and during the night the string on the horse became wrapped around his neck, strangling him. :(

Marlo felt incredibly guilty about the accident, especially since after she had given him the horse, she heard him calling for her over the monitor, but her husband was about to make love to her and asked her not to go to the child, so she didn't...

(Actually, one of the hard-to-believe parts for me in this movie was the fact that the child would want a fairly large, hard wooden object with him in his bed. I don't know...that part just didn't "work" for me.)

Thank you Lime! That's why she took an axe to the toy................ Agree with you on your last remark :-)

She was guilty in her sons deaf with no doubt, because first she gave him the toy which could be dangerous to him. And second what kind of mother would not come when her kid cry? Just heartless person would listen to her kid cry and didn't come. Sex was more important to her. Why she bother to have kids? She definitely didn't need them, because the sex was # 1 priority for her. I don't know what kind of law in America about things like this, but maybe in another country she and her husband would be jailed for not taking care to their kids and their daughter would be taking away from them. For normal mothers their kids are # one for everything, but for women who put sex on the first place is not. She deserve to be punished, because small kids couldn't take care of themselves and that what they need parents for.

She expresses her own guilt, but so does her husband for not letting her go to him. The eldest daughter also takes responsibility because she heard his call and also did not go.

However, this is one of the big dilemnas of parenting.
If you go every single time your child calls, they will never grow up. Beyond a certain age, which in this case Jamie had already passed, they have to learn to stand on their own two feet, so to speak. It's how they learn to deal with things themselves.

As far as the sex goes, that is erroneous thinking. She had spent so much time with her son already that she had been neglecting the rest of her family. That precise moment was her opportunity to address those responsibilities. To do otherwise would be to deny herself and her family members what was owed, making for very bad parenting. Similarly, she later attended to her daughters needs when they needed her attention. As a parent, you must take care of your own needs to, otherwise you're stressed out and useless to your children.

The child's death was tragic, yes, but realistically no-one was at fault and no court in the Western world would hold any of them at fault. Besides which, there would already have been an inquest from the local Police. If she or any of the others were indeed at fault, they would have been arrested and this would be a very different film.
