Question about the silver cup

Just what was that silver cup he pawned made of? Was it real silver? It must have been worth a lot for him to be able to buy a plane ticket to Mexico for his daughter and her telescope.

This was Danny Devito's characters Advertising award. It must have been extremly prestigious for him to get that ticket though

The way I figure it is this: The advertising award only paid for part of it all. Remember, he moved out of his apartment and all his furniture was to be repossessed. He was living on-base in what was a basically a duplex with a common shared kitchen, probably paying little or nothing for rent & utilities. He got to eat in the mess hall with the soldiers, again probably paying little or nothing for meals. Commuting costs? Aside from his quick run off-base for that one job interview, nothing! Bill was no doubt able to save up enough money from his salary, and that, along with the money from pawning the silver cup, was enough to buy the plane ticket and the telescope. Could be that the mother helped out a little as well. Anyway, that's how I understood it! Your mileage may vary!!

Great answer!!!

"Do you even remember what you came here to find?"

Way late here but you are pretty much right. Other than food and fuel costs, Bill's bills would be zero. As you said, he's living on base and the Army would definitely be footing the bill on utilities. I mean could you imagine the gas company sending some guy down to an army base to shut off someone's gas? So yeah, he'd be able to pocket most of his salary. Whether or not it would be enough, along with whatever he got for the award, to buy a ticket to Mexico and that telescope is another matter though.
