Spoilers: What was the point...

What's with French movies?
What was the point of adding the scene where her brothers( disgusting) pull up her dress and reveal her bare bottom? It added nothing to do movie. Just nasty.

I'm not one of those stupid Americans who gasp at nudity, I just think it is pointless.

The fact that, historically speaking, the scene is not without some truth might have had something to do with it. And c'mon, a little sensationalism never hurt anybody.

reply

I see your points.

But as I grow older, I appreciate movies like this. And human bodies are ultimately beautiful and wonderful to behold in any format. Porno and such are just vulgar and stupid for my taste, but movies like this is just a gem. I am glad that I watched it and the nudity didn’t bother me.

My life isn't any better than yours.

I noticed it but I have no idea why it shouldn't be there. I mean - it's 16th century. They could have shown much more to illustrate the time.

reply

Well, nowadays historians don't believe it, but at the time they were some rumours that margot was sleeping with her brothers. The contemporary songs were quite pornographic and rude since people weren't specially prudish. I think that this image just ilustrates what most people in the streets of paris believed to be happening.
and nobady is scared by some nudity at this side of the atlantic sea.

The point for her brother's pulling her skirt up was to show the tattoo she had, or they should she had on her thigh. She cut herself and rubbed dirt in it to mark being with La Mole..I think?

" Two languages in one head? No one can live at that speed "

reply

No it was to mark being with Anjou. In that scene they also expose a bite mark on her shoulder and ask Charles if it was him who made the mark. He says "yes, a long time ago"

The scene shows the breakdown in the Royal family's public face. Margot is very much an possession to her family. Here the brothers are not just demeaning her but also trying to compete with each other claim the most knowledge of their "object".
I got the impression the brothers did actually rape her too, it's quite a choppy cut scene. It was longer in the original cinematic release.

French films and indeed alot of European films have unabashed nudity.

reply

C' mon, cclub, nothing like a little softcore incest to liven up the proceedings.

Christ, I certainly enjoyed it a lot more (and she was better looking) than the 40-year-old guy getting the sado-maso bashings in The Passion Of The Christ...

If the Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard, It can also be like a chicken-pox mark.

My AP Euro history teacher said that there's a lot of evidence that Margot was sexually and verbally abused by all of her brothers. Hence the weird incestuous-like gathering between Margot and two of her brothers after the wedding. In the dress part, it seems that her brothers were about to publicly rape her.

reply

In the uncut version you see them take her into another room (after they pull up her skirt) where she is whipped and anjou tries to rape her... it makes a little more sense in the longer version

This scene was nasty and serves to show how wretched Margot's life was. Her mother never thought of her 4th child because she was a daughter who could offer her no power in the court. She was forced into a marriage of her mother's making with a person she considered her ultimate enemy. Her brothers used and abused her as they saw fit. She was reduced to seeking love wherever she could, including anonymous sex with men in the streets.

The distance is nothing. The first step is the hardest.
