Why does this movie only have around 550 votes?

I draw the conclusion that it probably wasn't released in the US, was it?

It was definitely released in North America, I remember the TV ads clearly during it's run in the theatres. I'm guessing that the title itself was something that didn't really grab a lot of people. Most people I have encountered have never even heard of Easter Island, let alone Rapa Nui. Sure, most know the "giant stone heads" but seem to have little interest in any of the history (fact or fiction) of the island and culture that produced them. I thought the movie was top-notch in every regard and have done my best to lend my copy to as many friends as I can. Some bite, some don't. A great picture though.

Too much nudity for USA audiences,or censorship folk, perhaps? The Americans that I saw it with,nt in USA,thought it would not be relsed there much for that reason.(and, they joked, not enough violence!).

Why would audiences not be interested in a country or cuture that they do not know? Doesn,t that make it more interesting?!

It was mainstream in New Zealand.

Pity it wasn,t released more popularly, too, what a great movie,I think,to miss out on.

"the typical American (That means a vast majority, sad to say..) are very "nationalistic," and do not give 2 s*its about anything outside of their everyday mainstream American culture (Going to work, watching sports, hitting the bars, etc.)"

And they shouldn't have to.

It explains many things then I guess.

I've spent time in Hong Kong, the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany and Egypt. In every one of those places I've run into many people that were only interested in drinking, sex etc. and didn't have a clue of what was going on in the world or care about it. This isn't some American-only phenomenon. The USA just happens to get the most attention so the morons here get more press than the morons in _______ (fill in any country). What you folks are engaged in is just another attempt to make yourselves feel superior by putting down other people who don't enjoy what you enjoy. You should go hang out with factory workers, and farmers and other people who work hard every day, come home tired, and do feel like enlightening themselves with a film whose story is completely made up but remains pretty damn boring.

it has so few votes because the people of rapa nui don't have internet and they are the only ones who still watch it. twice a day as I recall.

If anyone out there is watching/has watched the entire top 250, please could you PM me.

I watched it many times and I do not live there, hahahahaha :-) But I want to go there and see how it was. It is a great movie and for sure deserves much higher score than imdb did, in fact i don't mind about these numbers, they are fake anyway...
This movie I recommend!

I would agree with you that making a general assumption of stupidity on behalf of an entire country, is misguided and bad in itself.

On the quality of the movie I totally disagree. It may not have been wholly historically accurate, but I found it both moving and exciting. Not least thanks to a fantastic score by Stewart Copeland, and an intense rivalry between the characters played by Jason Scott Lee and Esai Morales.

Maybe poker's just not your game Ike. I know, let's have a spelling contest.

There may have been a theatrical release, but good luck finding it on home video.

Check the merchandising links: http://imdb.com/title/tt0110944/sales

Available on VHS and DVD -- but only in German. (The DVD has only a German audio track, so even if you have a region-free player, you're out of luck. Unless, that is, you happen to speak German, and would care to watch the film dubbed into that language.)

Too bad. I have never seen it, and really want to.

I just watched the Korean release and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the picture and the sound. There were some very minor problems with some of the color at times, but nothing to really complain about. And the presentation was in 1.33 aspect, so it wasn't a truly authentic transfer, but I'm sure none of the action was negatively affected. As was mentioned elsewhere in this section, the original ending had a voiceover about Pitcairn Island and speculation that the family could very well have made it to that island and this is completely missing from the Korean issue.

The movie is very enjoyable but did very poorly at the box office and in video release. Someone mentioned "too much nudity", but this isn't entirely accurate. The REAL problem was too much MALE nudity. American men get incredibly nervous at seeing male asses on screen. Homophobia or whatever, it just seems like American men's sphincters sieze up whenever a good looking male shows his naked butt on the screen. And there were a LOT of male butts on view here.

But the big thing when the movie came out was a strange anti-Kevin Costner reaction going on after the wild success of "Dances With Wolves". Costner didn't help the situation by acting like he thought he was the best thing to happen to Hollywood in recent history. Costner talked about "Rapa Nui" and wasn't shy about saying how brilliant he was to help bring this movie to the American viewing public.

So initial viewers went into the theater, were confused by the strange culture, the men were terrorized by the view of so many naked male bodies and everyone was so tired of Kevin Costner that they were very prepared to hate this movie, his first non-starring offering as a producer. Plus, great as they are, few people were really familiar with Jason Scott Lee or Esai Morales and there weren't any other familiar faces in the movie. Of course, this actually HELPS with "selling" this very alien culture, but it didn't help get people in those theater seats.

But it is truly a great movie. Flawed but great.

There were lots of commercials for this when WaterWorld ran. The box office wasn't exactly on a strong point during that time. I think most people missed it, and the movie seemed like a borefest from the trailers.
