It's not nearly as good as the original but is far from the worst horror movie ever.

I prefer it to the original.

While it has a lesser budget, it has a more compelling script and arguably better characters with the exception of the absent Lance Hendriksen, who will return for the next two sequels as a ghost. Plus it has superior women -- striking Ami Dolenz and petite Soleil Moon Frye.
