Nothing about this feels like a sequel.

Yeah that's the way I've always looked at it. I guess Ashes to Ashes is the true sequel as it basically follows the original and ignores this one.

I see it the same way. It doesn't really have a lot in common with the original so I see it as more of a remake than a sequel.

It's definitely a sequel, it's just one of those standalone sequels. "alternate take on the concept"....nah, not really.
