This was obviously a low budget film, but was thoroughly entertaining and had an enviable star line. I have seen films with a hundred million or more spent on them that were disasters. So why did this one work so well?
I think it worked well for three reasons: 1) hard to nit pick a script by the Bard 2) adaptation was bare bones, which helps rather than detracts 3) the star power and charisma of the actors
Can you imagine what the salary base alone would be today for such a lineup? Yes, I'd like to know what they actually did spend on it just to prove that an engrossing, intelligent movie can be made for less than 100 millions.
Good points, although I just have to "nit pick" one little point... this is not a script by Shakespeare. This is an adaptation of the story Hamlet was based on. Same story source, different story tellers. Still a good movie.
