I was impressed, if for nothing else, by the stellar lineup for what is clearly a low budget endeavor.
Helen Mirren, Gabriel Byrne, Tom Wilkinson, Brian Cox, Andy Serkis, and of course Kate Beckinsale and Christian Bale before they were bona fide stars.
You'd be hard pressed to come up with a better cast for a movie that looks like something less than Derek Jeter's weekly salary was the budget for.
I agree. I had never heard of this film, and to be honest, had I known in advance that it was an early version of Hamlet I would not have watched, but I found it totally absorbing and could not believe the famous actors who were in it. It was almost like "spot the star". I get THIS-TV from an antenna, and it is becoming my favorite channel for off beat and rarely seen films of the kind which TCM once showed.

It was released in my early adulthood, and I didn't know any of the actors. I only saw it because I was told it was the original danish saga that inspired Shakespears Hamlet - wich I didn't know back then - and I though "What the *beep*?! Is Hamlet danish?!?!"
Didn't like it much back then, but if you're into legend origins, it's worth a watch!
I was impressed with the abbreviated shots of Helen Mirren's tits...what a pair...that was the highlight of the film
