Just curious, why didn't Neruda *spoilers*

Why didn't he write? I know he eventually visited showing that he did care but why didn't he write for so long when he'd said he would, it had been well over a year.

My guess is because even after all that he did for Mario, to Pablo Neruda, he was just some insignificant postman that delivered his mail in a place that he did not want to be dying to get back to south america and after a year he was easily forgettable to him...the ending makes me wonder sometimes did Pablo honestly remember him at all up until he listened to that message and found out that he named his son after him..

Then why did he come back to visit? Mario was he's only friend there so he had to have come back for him and no for the island..I think.

I agree with horea_cnx: then why did he come back to visit? Would he agree to be best man at the wedding of a person he doesn't care about?
I don't think Neruda didn't want to write; it just didn't happen. I guess he was a rather busy man (despite being a poet) with lots of contacts. I imagine other friends of his wouldn't hear from him for some time either.
Happens to me as well; some friends of mine don't hear from me (and vice versa) for months, even more than a year. But that doesn't mean I don't care about them.

I never make mistakes. Once I thought I did, but I was wrong.

I think he got busy. In the letter, it said his secretary sent it so he probably got a position of power not to mention the traveling he did. Eventually, it had been so long he decided to just visit him because it'd be more meaningful.

i think once he left the island he had to focus a lot on his poetry. its not that he thought that the postman was insignificant he just needed to focus on other things for a while before returning.

he knew that he gave him the gift of love with beatrice, and im sure he knew that their love for each other would last, and that the postman would be happy with her.

reply

It was obvious he had not forgotten Marion or Beatrice and seemed move when he heard the child called Pablito. Like others said he would have been much in demand. Perhaps he intended to visit sooner, rather than write, and it didn't happen as soon as he thought.
