Does anyone know if this film was ever even in theaters??

I don't remember it being so.

reply

Unfortunately, it was. In Romania, at least.

reply

In Finland it was.

reply

In Canada too.

reply

It was released in cinemas in the UK. I remember taking my little brother to see it, we were the only ones there !

reply

in France it was. I remember I went to see it , it was during the summer, in a small village. I even remember that the one and only moment that audience was "amused" at best when was Cmmdt. Lassard gets in the wrong car after the ceremony. Thats about it. At the time, I was 12 but I was able to see it was a Crappy movie. But funny enough, I think i've seen them all, even if this seventh act is very very very bad, it wasn't the worst. I don't remember much about the sixth one, but juts the feeling that I was sorry for a franchise that seemed so cool in the beginning of the 80's. (at least, let say the first two, and, if you are nice, the third.)

reply

It was. It was only released in a city in Texas of all places. WB always *beep* up on their movies. They did the same thing with the Superman rerelease!

reply

It was in the UK. I saw it together with 4 other people in the audience...the releasing week.

Can I interest you in something?[i/]
[i]Well I'm tempted to say yes immediately.

reply

In germany, it was!

reply

In Portugal it was

reply

It did really bad didn't it in the cinemas in the UK?

reply

For not surprise it was in Russia

reply

It was released in theaters in Puerto Rico. I was in P.R. when the film was released in theaters there as was Kickboxer 4: The Aggressor.

reply

It was definatley released in the U.K. I remember when I went to see The Lion King (I was 9 at the time) the cinema workers were actually tearing up the posters. If they did that, then it must really be a bad film.

reply

as far as I can remember it was a HUGE HIT in Estonia (former part of Soviet Union), it was at the time when we only had like 1 movie a month here :)
I was like 12 years old at the time and I remember it was one of the worst movies I had ever seen.

And we had like only one decent movie theatre for the whole city of Tallinn (with approximately 450,000 population).

I know there were other cinemas in the city, but eventually they were all closed down.

I can't remember that the movie was funny, but I do remember that it was really popular and the movie theatre was crowded when I went to see it.

it was released in the US, but for a very short period of time, after a few weeks and only making $126,247, it was pulled out of theaters.

Me and a friend of mine were on the Norweigan premier of this movie. There were five people in the teathre (including me and my friend).

It was released in the US but it only made around 125,000. It must have been in the theater a week or two.

Just for the fun of it, here's a rundown of the domestic draw of all the Police Academies.

Police Academy (1984): $81 million. 6th highest domestic in 1984.
PA 2 (1985): $55 million. 11th domestic in 1985.
PA 3 (1986): $43 mil. 17th domestic.
PA 4 (1987): $28 mil. 44th domestic. <--- this is where the franchise lost steam.
PA 5 (1988): $19 mil. 52nd domestic.
PA 6 (1989): $11 mil. 78th domestic.
PA 7 (1994): $126,247. 227th domestic.

One more odd fact. At one point, the original Police Academy was 58th on the All-Time domestic gross list. My how the franchise fell.

These facts brought to you by boxofficemojo.com and one very bored I.T. worker with nothing better to do.

If you buy a ticket for a remake, you are the problem, not Hollywood.

In Australia, it was the only film in the series that didn't get a cinema release, it went direct-to-video. Which is quite astounding given some of the films that have been given big-screen releases over here. the PA films are fairly popular over here so it's still a surprise it didn't at least get a quick release.

According to BoxOfficeMojo.com, the widest American theatrical release was only three screens. But obviously, based on previous posts in this thread, the movie was shown theatrically in at least several foreign countries.

It being shown on just three screens here leads me to believe there was some kind of clause in a contract associated with the movie, requiring that it be an American theatrical release. Some movie studios literally rent a screen for one week to make the movie fit the legal definition of a theatrical release.

I remember one theater in Manhattan showed it for a week. I just happened to drive passed the theater and saw "Police Academy 7" on the marquee. I couldn't believe it when I saw it, so I looked it up in the newspaper, and there was no official ad or poster for it, just the listing in the showtime listings.

I was usually pretty good when it came to the knowledge of upcoming movies and such, especially at that time. But I had no clue that they were even planning a 7th installment, after the fact that "6" flopped miserably. If I hadn't driven passed the theater that week, I would have never known it was in theaters...well, until now that is, with Box Office Mojo.

reply

No, "Assignment Miami Beach" was the 5th installment. "City Under Siege" was the 6th, "Mission to Moscow", the movie in question, is the 7th film.

yes, it came to the cinema here in Scotland, I remember going to see it and being hugely disappointed, and I love the PA films.

reply

I saw it in the UK...

Well, I saw the first half of the film before walking out on it.

To date, this is the only film I've ever walked out of the cinema from as it was so bad.

Regarding the 'one week' rental thing, I remember the old discount theatre here in London Ontario, and that piece of crap Tarzan(with the guy from Starship Troopers) movie from 1998 only lasting one week there. I think it had about as much time in the main stream theatres as well.

I didn't even know this movie existed until I saw it on TV several years after it was released.

I saw PA7 on a drive-in double feature with Airheads in Los Angeles. I can't even remember the drive-in now.

Might you know why it didn't get a wide release? — Because I have a feeling that the U.S. release was intentionally limited.
