Product Placement

Did anyone notice how prominently Coke and coca cola products are on display in this film. There is product placement in alot films..but I just can't think of seeing a film where is was so evident

reply

Yes this has been discussed. Good observation

there's one scene where there's a wide shot of the news room and the coke machine is glowing red. it's almost like the black obelisk at the beginning of kubrick's 2001. except instead of monkeys we have journalists.

product placement goes way back... take gordon's dry gin's prominent placement in the african queen with coinciding print advertisement for the product starring humphrey bogart.

it's just going to get more and more prevalent as times goes on. i mean, look at one decade on from the paper... i, robot is one giant commercial.

i don't mind too much. at some point there will be over saturation of brand images and it will all seem like background. just as long as the story holds up and there's enough to keep me invested in the movie and the product placement doesn't go against the conscience of the film i don't mind.

Coca-Cola is always in movies. Heck, it was used in Simon Birch...

There was even a shot with a 2-liter bottle of Minute Maid Orange Soda (which was owned by Coca-Cola). They don't even make Minute Maid Orange Soda anymore; kinda took me back seeing it again.

Gamera is really neat! He is made from turtle meat! We've been eating Gamera!

ya, there's a lot of product placement in this film, but I think it fits in with the story. In an office building, there are vending machines everywhere. And Henry seems like the kind of guy who swore off coffee a long time ago -- but still needs that caffeine pep-up.

That vending machine was pretty visible
Also it seems that a certain computer make features in lots of films and tv shows

reply

Well, the fact that Henry drinks tons of Coke is a running topic throughout the movie, so the product placement made sense in terms of the storyline.

But note that several people, including his wife, scream at him "it's just like you're drinking battery acid!!"

So it's not like the entire movie was completely a Coke commercial.

I noticed the coke thing too, but not for the same reason. In the opening scenes, after he wakes from bed and grabs the first can, look at the side of it. You can clearly see it is a promotional can with the bat symbol on it.

This movie filmed right before Batman Forever, so I wonder if it was intentional. It was right around the time they were looking for (or had just found) a new Batman.

reply

No. Nobody noticed.

So? Big deal.
