Michael Keaton's best performance?

Seriously, he was so funny and so intense in this. I can't think of any actor who could've played this role.

Does no one remember this movie? I know it wasn't a huge hit, but with these actors, it should really get more attention.

Well, you're only gonna get fans of the movie, for the most part, on this particular board, so you're probably speaking to the coverted LOL...

I agree with you ... well, actually I could think of others who could have played the role, but I think it's one of his best performances as I've said in other threads. Really, I like everyone in it, a great ensemble cast.

I agree with all of that. I would doubt you're going to find many people who saw this movie and hated it, and because of that I doubt you're going to find many people here who were just lukewarm on the movie but wanted to come post about it. I think Michael Keaton was fantastic and completely fun to watch in this movie, but I could watch him in almost anything. This movie with its frenetic pacing is perfect for Keaton, and he just nailed it (as did everyone else, really). This really I think the only Ron Howard movie where he really showed much style at all and didn't just "direct-by-numbers" as he usually does ("Ransom" doesn't count, he was trying to do a David Fincher rip-off and failed miserably). The directing in this movie is really very good though, as are the performances, and the script is great too. I really enjoy this movie and hope that someday it will get the respect it deserves.

I don't think I've seen a Michael Keaton movie yet that I didn't like. He brings a personality to each character that is just different enough that you don't sit there and say "There's Keaton playing Batman, there he is in Mr. Mom, oh look, Michael Keaton in the Dream Team."

I've not seen this film in years, and need to view it again, because I remember enjoying it immensely back in the old days. Vintage Keaton.

I don't know if it's his best perfomance (in "My life" he was INCREDIBLE!), but if not, it's his second best!
I'm a journalist and I saw it when a was still in high school, I remember I loved it! Later, as years and jobs passed by, I knew some many people that fit into the shoes of every character of the film!
I agree: the cast couldn't be better and the perfomances are great. It's a pitty it isn't more known or at least better rated... It deserves it.

Keaton is also great in Clean and Sober, playing an alcoholic.

Keaton is a very good actor, but he hasn't made the right choices lately. This is one of his good films and he gives a powerfull and intense performance.I think the whole cast is great, but the "stealer" of the film is easily Mr.Duval as usual. What an excellent actor!!!He makes greatness out of nothing, just with his strong presence throughout his whole career,in many of his roles that many times aren't so great as roles.

I think it's this or 'Night Shift.' He just flat out stole that from Winkler there. But, he's really good here. Night Shift was an out and out comedy, in this he had to show some range and nail the dramatic parts.

This is a far superior drink to meths. The wankers don't drink it because they can't afford it."

I saw this movie for the first time over the weekend. I had been wanting to see it for years, just because of the cast, but this was the first time and I absolutely loved it. Michael Keaton was great. I wouldn't say it was his best performanc (that would be CLEAN AND SOBER) but he was great here and worked really well with Glenn Close and Marisa Tomei (who has rarely been as appealing onscreen as she was here). The screenplay was a little busy but it more than held my attention. This movie was a lot of fun.

Keaton is great in this film - I think it is sad that he was a rising star in the 90s and some how tailed off into bit parts towards the end of the decade.

I wish people would cast him more - I think he is a terrfic actor - who else could play Beetlejuice?!

THE PAPER is a hugely underrated film that I first saw when I was 13 - I'm now 24! Eek! (where does the time go?) - it made me want to be a journalist (& I ended up a film student). I have yet to meet someone else in person who has seen this film without me recommending it.

It is definitely a film that I could & do re-watch with pleasure.

I'm glad to see someone enjoyed this film as much as I did. I also agree with you regarding BEETLEJUICE. God, I'd love to see him in a sequel to that.

I'm not a Keaton fan but I thought this is one of his strongest performances by far.

I'd rate his performance here behind "Clean and Sober" and "Night Shift" but a very good movie and yes one of Keaton's best performances. Too bad this movie was pretty much ignored.

Clean and Sober was his best. But he was great in this, as always.
