What's with the crowds lack of enthusiasm?.

I was watching this DVD last night. And it really stuck out to me like a sore thumb. The audience just sits there doing absolutely nothing, only bothering to cheer in between songs.

That's the power of any Pink Floyd concert in general, P.U.L.S.E is no exception. We are usually accustomed to loud, fun-loving audiences as concert-goers. But when it comes to Floyd, they don't simply perform; they put so much effort into their projects that they turn into something totally inconceivable, unbelievable and surreal .And the audience in turn do exactly what they are expected to do: They scream and plead for an encore, sing along in tune with Gilmour the lyrics of "Wish you were here" line by line (listen to the audio CD), and mostly remain silent and cry at the precise and delicately beautiful solos of a guitar god, whether they are conscious of it or not is something else, because it's pure, stunned awe that floors them, through every second. And when you're awed, you don't yell and play the fool. You'd rather shut up and feel lucky to simply be there live while rock history redeems itself.

its because Pink Floyd principally Roger Waters has made it exceptionally clear that its the audiences job to sit there and be entertained and not be brainless screaming lunny's who chant for Money at the opening notes of DSOTM... Dumbasses

Because they are there to hear great music, not to jump around and scream like idiots. Whenever I'm at a show these days there are kids who think the point of a concert is to be as stupid as possible. Floyd fans aren't like that. They are there to listen to some of the most astounding music ever performed. Floyd fans enjoy music the way it was meant to be enjoyed. If I had been at this show (my first stop once my time machine is complete) I'm sure I just would've stood there and stared, in awe. You don't have to jump, scream, shout, whistle, or smash into other concert goers as hard as you can to show that you appreciate the band on stage, and I'm sure that Gilmour and crew understand that.

Going to have to disagree with your last statement there; that all depends on the kind of music being played XD It's great fun at metal shows because the music really gets you going, you know what I mean? I will say, though, that a Floyd concert is definitely not the place to be acting like that... That's just a problem with a lot of people these days: they just don't know when things are and aren't appropriate and make fools of themselves everywhere they go.

I think it's the audio and position of the mic's. The CD version of the concert has the crowd going balistic. I am assuming there was only the one concert? At Earl's?

If i recall correctly there was such a demand for tickets that Pink Floyd agreed to do three shows at Earl's court on that particular tour. The DVD was recorded on the last night. So it may be possible that the CD was recorded on a different night. That or it was just a different recording technique that allowed a lot of idle noise.

On the DVD and CD the audience is EQ'd down a bit so as not to get too in the way of the actual music.

That said it best I think! LOL. You go to a Pink Floyd concert for THE EXPERIENCE!

reply

it is a dull show, you can't blame the audience.

reply

Actually they did 14 nights at Earls Court.

Nostalgia sells lots of tickets.

I lived in England for 2 years from 1978 - 80 and went to several concerts while there including Yes, Blue Oyster Cult, Nazareth, Bad Company, Ted Nugent and Styx. At all of these concerts, the crowd sat in their seats, quietly observing the show and only cheered in between songs. I've seen more enthusiasm in a crowd while giving collegiate lectures! It's just the natural British reserve and nothing more.

I just assumed they were all baked. I know I would be for something like that.
