I concur. It was a really good film. I was actually shocked that Diana Ross performed so well in this. And, Maura Tierney was great como siempre.

I just happened to be flipping the channels today and came across this one on the Lifetime Movie Network.
When I stopped, all I could say was "Holy Crap! What the heck wrong with Diana?!?"
I didn't know she could act like that! I'm impressed!
I mean, her character went through heroine withdrawl in 'Lady Sings the Blues' but, it was never like THIS.
(I came into the movie just as she began walking down the sidewalk looking scary and mumbling to herself)
Her performance was so scary that I had to stop flipping channels to figure out what was going on! Her behavior was really scary...and kind of heartbreaking. I really felt for her!

Hat's off to ya, Ms. Ross! You did an amazing job!

Wow!

I agree. I was shocked how good this movie was. It took the high road instead of pandering or making a serious condition some sort of "ratings grabber."

I think the mental health world should have gotten behind this movie when it was originally broadcast so people who have no idea could get at least a glimpse into a world so few of us can even begin to fathom.

I know that I learned a lot and was far more patient and understanding when I met someone (and not a very nice someone) who has similar problems. And in the final analysis, what more can you ask for a TV movie?

I found a video version on amazon.co.uk, but you need to double-check and make sure it'll work on your VHS player stateside.

What a wonderful, thoughtful post. I realize it's old, but wanted to commend you for it anyway.

Until today I'd never heard of this film, let alone seen it. Probably because it was made for TV. Ever since I saw Lady Sings the Blues, I've thought Diana Ross could be an outstanding actress, and this certainly affirms it.

I'm only 10 minutes in, and don't know if I'll be able to watch much more. It's so heartbreaking. I'm very impressed with Diana Ross for taking on such a challenging role and completely throwing herself into it, and with the filmmakers for taking the high road.

Where can I find the DVD

She was ten times better in this than in "Lady Sings The Blues" - in fact I would rate this as one of the top two or three performances of all time and puts Diana in the same class as Meryl Streep.

I wouldn't put her in the same class as Meryl Streep, but she is indeed very good here. 7/10 stars from me.
