Scene with the Ouiji board..... Statue of mary????

When they are using the ouiji board, the camera shows the candle blowing out, behind that is clearly a statue of mary, so they were catholic, catholic people are like totally against ouiji boards, I could see if it was juat the kids, but They mom was there, telling the brother not to push it, I really don't this....

I think the Ouija board was used purely for amusement purposes for the children. I'm sure if the mother had found out they were performing legitimate seances or whatnot, then she probably would have put an end to it.

And--I don't have a copy of the film with me so I could be wrong--but I don't think the kids ever explicitly mention the Ouija board aloud beforehand. If so, then another explanation could be that the mother is in the dark about the whole Ouija board affair and her "don't push it" remark is said in response to--what must sound like from her standpoint--Larry picking on his sister.

my grandparents are strict Catholics, and they always allowed their children to have a Ouiji board. They saw it as a game, not a form of consorting with the Devil. My mother, who went to Catholic school (K-12) said most of her school friends had them too- they were seen as amusement.

Catholics aren't supposed to lie, cheat, steal, or hurt anyone either ... and yet, incredibly, it happens once in a while in the movies. You don't see people complaining "... I didn't buy that, they're CATHOLIC!"

I don't know if I've lived 10,000 days, or one day 10,000 times...

This Catholic person grew up in a house with a ouija board. It's a game, not a religion. That's why they sell it with the toys, not the rosaries.

I grew up Catholic and my mother bought me a Ouija board when I was about 12, after I begged her for it. Decades later, I still have it. We know Faith taught in a Catholic school (crucifix on the wall). Whether she was Catholic, well, that's anybody's guess. Some people look at the board as a game, while others think it more sinister. I wouldn't make a big deal of it in a movie being used simply as a game and a "prediction" device. But that's just me.

No matter, the movie is such fun to watch, I never thought one thing about the Ouija board being used.

On second thought, I guess they were Catholic, considering the statue of Mary and that she taught in the Catholic school. hmmm

No, it's usually evangelical protestants who get worked up about minor occult trappings like Ouija boards and tarot cards. Most Catholics are much more relaxed about them.

there was this screw wot really had it in for me

I do believe you are right. Catholics are more liberal in many ways compared to evangelical protestants. I know, I'm evangelical.

Many Catholics let their kids use Ouija boards. But I think the real point is, the movie is full on signs. You see the Virgin Mary again when it is placed on the windsheild by the nuns that fill the car with gas. Without them, she would not have gotten to Rome in time to meet her soul mate.
