Did Beth's tribe disapprove of Jake for his lineage or his character?

Its not really clear in the movie, maybe those who read the book know more about it.

It's mentioned several times that Beth's tribe didn't approve of Jake, and is why Beth left vowing "never to return". Jake mentions Beth was the pride of the tribe while he was just some "blackhouse who came and stole her away" and came from a family of "fckng slaves".

I know indigenous cultures have some fckd up values sometimes. I was just wondering if they disapproved of his character(was he such a dick when they first met??), or if it really was his family background. If it was his character, Beth was truly naive. But if it was just his lineage, then the tribe is partially to blame IMO.

Thanks!!

Because he was an uneducated, low class thug with no respect for traditional Maori culture, who offered their daughter no future.

The word you're searching for is 'black-a$$'.

Because Europeans didn't have rigid social classes, aristocracies, and the divine right of kings, right?

"Don't cry, it is to be; in time I'll take away your miseries and make 'em mine... D'Evils."

Yes, they did have that.
In what way exactly does that contradict the fact that "indigenous cultures have some fckd up values sometimes"?
