A bizzare but interesting story.

I saw this on TV back in 1994 and I thought it was a strange story. I saw it again a few days ago and this time I paid more attention. So let me get this straight, and intelligent girl named Lucy marries a man old enough to be her father simply because she goofed up and bumped into a snotty little deb at an elitist catillion that she was forced to go to by a mother who was a REAL PIECE OF WORK and called everyone "hoity toilets" (which they were) and stopped being invited to parties she never wanted to attend in the first place. Was the mother in total denial that her daughter was not an elitist snob and deb like the other girls? Apparently so. I don't get it, why whould Lucy care about social standing when it didn't mean squat to her? And I don't really think she care much about her mother's opinion when Lucy clearly saw thru her childish behavior but I suppose it was a different time then when women were defined by who they married. And in this case Lucy was not happily married and wasn't very happy with being a wife to a neglectful husband. She was however happy being a mother and you could see she was devoted to those children. Lucy and Castalia scenes were awesome together and it seems that Castalia was a better mother to Lucy than her own and told her the straight up truth about women's thing and was there to comfort Lucy when she needed it. I'd still reccomend OLCWTA if you want something different.

I think the movie had some holes in it. I enjoyed it very much, i thought the performances were incredible. I had bought the book years ago but I couldn't really get into it. Now I want to read it again because i think there are probably more explanations and detail. There were some life lessons in the movie too many to write about but my suggestion is to read the book and see if you have answers to your questions. I thought donald Sutherland was amazing and Diane lane blew me away!

I just finished the book. If you liked the movie, you'll love the book. It's long, took me 4 months to finish, but that was reading just a few minutes a day.
