Locations - Anyone know where?

Does anyone know where Scalinger's palatial estate is as shown in the movie?
Not only is the building a work of art, but the topiary gardens are a delight!

According to history, he lived in Agen, France, but an internet search returns nothing about this beautiful, futuristic for the 16th Century home Dr. Julius Caesar Scalinger supposedly inhabited and was equipped with scientific labs.
Where is this location? I don't think it was a movie set.

I would love to discover where the other locations are that are shown in the movie.
This would make a nice travelog special feature for a definitive DVD edition sometime in the near future!

I would love to converse or correspond with someone who actually worked on this production. I can tell the movie was a real labour of love.

Most of the movie was filmed in Romania.

I could identify Castle Hunedoara in Hunedoara County.

Castel Bran near Brasov.

The Chruch of Birlan in Transsilvania.

Most likely the Scalinger Estate is not in Romania but somewhere in France.

reply

Thank you! Are you from Romania, or have you done some travelling there?

I would love to know where that estate is which was used as a set as Scalinger's Estate - I love that French architecture! Lovely! And the topiary gardens also.

I am German and living in Romania, yes, and I have allready visited all the places. I like the Hunedoara Castle the most. It realy looks untouched. But it played just a minor role in the movie and was never visible in total...

reply

Oh yes it was visible in total (from quite far distance though), I even captured some pictures with it from the movie, castle of Hunedoara is my favorite too...Watch it again and you'll see it.

The Scalinger house and orangery were sets built next to the old communist budapest studios, next to the lake. Both interiors and exteriors, They were built from reference of the period by designer Peter Hampton. The movie was all filmed in Romania except for the one french chateau.
Yes the movie was a labour of love by all concerned.

Are you the director of this movie? If so, great work, realy liked it a lot.

reply

yes I am the Director and it was a real labour of love. thankyou for your kind words

reply

Thank you so much! I love this movie, it's one of my all-time favorites!

You have crafted an incredibly fine piece of work! Bravo!

I give it 10 stars out of 10! Everything works so well in this, it is so realistic and amazingly accurate to Michel de Notre Dame's life and times.
The casting is superb, every little detail is perfectly in place, like a classic studio movie of the 1930s to 1970s.

Amazing, the Scalinger chateau looks like a real building and estate. No one would have guessed it was a movie set. So it was filmed in Budapest, Hungary?
How interesting. I would love to see a documentary on the making of this film.
The production designer and art directors worked very hard to give Tcheky Karyo's Nostradamus a 16th-Century world to inhabit. Everything in this movie is exquisitely excellent.

Thank you for that interesting bit of Nostradamus lore! It is fascinating how his first prophecy took place so precisely as he had written it. It's no wonder that Queen Catherine de Medici adored him and was his devoted patron until his death. I love the way those scenes are played out in this outstanding classic film!
