If it was for adults, I think the satire was a little too silly. If it was intended for kids I think Reiner was out of his mind, because kids won't be able to understand the satiric elements anyway. It's a major miscalculation to make a kid's movie based on adult interests. You can't have your cake and eat it to. Reiner should have aimed his script at older viewers and not marketed this as a family film. It would probably have been recieved better.

That must be why Shrek, Shrek 2, Robots, A Bug's Life, Antz, Toy Story, Toy Story 2, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, the Lion King, Madagascar, and Pirates of the Carribean have all done so horribly. Who would ever try to mix kids interests with adult's? Reiner just did it first and did it well. He was ahead of his time.

...y;know, the type that laugh at dirty jokes they don't really understand, and want to be seen as sophisticated and adult, but won't leave home without their fav "blanky" or "teddy". (Heck, I know some adults who even do that!)
It's the type ofstory that's trying to be daring, but not gory or sick.
