The scene where North first is met by lawyer Arthur Belt (Jon Lovitz) on a commercial street, is in Caldwell NJ, near the junction of Bloomfield Ave. (Country Rd. 506) and Smull Ave, more precisely, right in front of 348/350 Bloomfield Ave., nearer to the Brookside Ave. corner.
The First Fidelity Bank on Smull Ave. corner, is now Wells Fargo Bank.

Most of the other storefronts seem to have different occupants today.

As a fan of NORTH, I've been there! But just once, and didn't have enough time to examine the storefronts carefully. However, If you go to youtube.com and plug in "Bloomfield Avenue, Caldwell" you'll find a video of Caldwell Avenue, and shows the spot where NORTH was filmed. Someone videotaped a car trip down the street, to the music of Violent Femmes(!). I posted a comment regarding the film shoot.

By the way, there's another New Jersey location you might want to visit. Go to the Bridgewater Commons Mall in Bridgewater NJ. You will find "North's Bridge"...right across from Macy's. This is the scene where North walks across the bridge to get to his 'secret spot.' The bridge is still there, and almost exactly the same as it was in the summer of '93. I've been there a few times and have some Iphone pictures of the bridge. Unfortunately, the interior shots of the mall were filmed in a Hollywood studio.

I suspect that there might be a few more New Jersey filming locations. The amusement park (where North went with the Nelsons and Scarlet Johanneson) is an actual NJ place, though I forget the name. North's school and his family house could have been filmed in NJ but I haven't verified.

I think that Caldwell, NJ is the most interesting because it could be studied to see all the changes. It's also interesting why they chose that site, obviously because it's so any-town USA looking.

The mall was an easy one; I had seen that also. I think some of the filming was done inside there, judging from the scenes themselves. I think the conversation may have been filmed in the studio. But if some shots were made within the mall, they would have time capsule value also.

Some scenes were in Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden, probably North traipsing through the woods leading to the mall. One might be able to see how some trees have grown in 20 years, like the big, forked-trunk oak(?) tree.

If you're a fan of North you should definitely get the iTunes Store HD version. It's $12.99. Amazon only has an SD download available currently. The HD is stunning.

The scenes at the baseball field were shot in West Caldwell, at Richard Park, which was renovated just for this movie. I grew up on Richard Ave. and played at this field all the time as a kid.

Google Richard Park in West Caldwell, NJ and check out Earth View. You'll see that when North rode his bike across the field at the end (with 9 minutes to go before the deadline), when he ran into the woods, in actuality he wasn't going anywhere. We went exploring in these woods many times growing up. There's nothing back there but woods and the Passaic River, which a kid would be unable to cross.

The original baseball field faced the opposite direction, with home plate being located in the South corner. In "North", home plate is in the North corner. The field had become overgrown and really wasn't playable anymore until the movie crew came in. They added the fence, scoreboard and stands, flipped the field, and basically rejuvenated the park.

I'm guessing, without rewatching, that they used the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden as the fill-in between Richard Park and the mall exterior, with that pedestrian bridge which is surrounded by trees.

I'm fascinated by what location scouts do, but would never want to be a location manager.
