I watched this again a few nights ago. It was maybe the 5th or 6th time I'd seen it. Love this movie, it gets better every time. But I gotta say, each time I see it, I feel stronger and stronger about one thing...
He should have gotten on that plane with Melanie and headed to Hawaii. Man, oh man, how could anyone say no to Hawaii with that woman?? She had a bunch of coconut oil....
I missed that part of the movie. Was it his decision not to go with her? I thought it was sort of mutual.
I've always liked Melanie. I especially liked her in Shining Through.

Clearly you missed most of the movie where he is looking after a lot of different people in town that he clearly cares about.
He's also made a connection with his grandson and is actually talking with his son as well.
Going away with Melenie Griffiths character would just have been another wrong thing that he did with his life. Maybe he's changing for the better (in that he looks after his family).
