Newman's Best?

I have seen all of Paul Newman's Oscar nominated roles and many others and i firmly believe he is the greatest actor of all time, imo! But having just recently watched Nobody's Fool I might have to say that this was his best permance! It wasn't a strong passionate role, but what it was was subtle, lighthearted, and so honest! It just seemed perfect on Paul's part and a good movie to boot! What do you guys think?

I think HUD takes it. What a nasty bastard. Good acting, though.

This is certainly one of his best performances in one of his best and probably most underrated movies. I still think his performance in THE VERDICT is his best but this one is up there.

- The Verdict
- Nobody's Fool
- Cool Hand Luke
- The Color of Money
- The Road to Perdition
- Hud
- Absence of Malice
- The Hustler
- Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

IMO, he got much better as he got older. Even Newman once stated that didn't really consider much of his work to be any good, until the 1980's.

.."The Hudsucker Proxy". Talk about your gems, this is one film that needed no polish to shine it up a bit, not with Paul Newman as Mussburger! One of my top ten movies overall, I adore Newman's hilarious, tack sharp performance and the way he bit into the absurdity of his part....an absolute delight to witness.

I don't know if it was his "best" but this is what happens when an Actor works his entire life to become better and better. Lee Strasburg once said that Newman could have been as good as Brando but he relied on his looks too much. Strasburg never lived to see what happened when Newman became more than Brando. This movie is an example. Brando could never have played this part. For Newman this was just another step in his development as an actor. Brando dropped out, Newman kept learning.

reply

Well said.

This is one of his more underrated performances. It's one of my favorite Newman movies.

myndchanger:I too don't "know" that this was his best, but I do "believe" it was.
I did appreciate your Strasburg and Brando references. Newman and Tracy, hmm. As one who sees no need to sexually differentiate actors, my best would be Newman and Streep.
I have noted several claims of others as to Hud and The Verdict as being his greatest and while I would not belittle his performance in either, I am of the firm opinion that his performance in Hud was greatly enhanced by the magnificent one of Patricia Neal and as far as The Verdict, a picture of many shortcomings is concerned, I believe that the best thing he did here was to successfully play a drunk, something not difficult to be, but oh so difficult to convincingly portray as he did.

reply

The simple fact is that Paul Newman showed up every day of his life, He kept learning when other actors were dropping out. He was the best of the best to the end of his life.

Take a minute and try to imagine Brando as Sully. Just doesn't work, much like trying to imagine Brando as Butch Cassidy. Paul Newman went beyond those early 50-60's posers.

reply

I like "Nobody's Fool" a lot, and I think Newman's performance is excellent, but I think he had several better roles.

"Hud," "The Verdict," "Cool Hand Luke" and "Butch Cassidy," just to name a few right off the top.

reply

I tend toward believing that Paul Newman never had a "best" just because he always kept getting better. His best was probably still to come but age and a need to spend time with his family finally forced him to stop. My two greatest are Spencer Tracy and Paul Newman. They could do comedy, drama-whatever and kept learning all their lives.

I know some guys in their mid-50s who are pretty sharp-looking who are basically just scraping along.

Whatever one's opinion about this movie, you can't deny the fact that this is an absolute gem. It's one of those quiet character driven films that only work when you have the perfect cast and a great story....needless to say this baby has both. No noise, no huge special effects...no twisted murder plot or major disasters.....just a sweet natured tale of people living their lives with a gentle sublime humor that lifts the spirit better than a Hollywood blockbuster ever could. I absolutely love this film and yes, I do believe it's one of Newman's finest performances and should definitely be up there in the top five of his greatest movies.

Love this film! My three favorite Newman performances are "The Verdict", "Hud" and "Nobody's Fool" - but I am glad that he also had a great role in his last on-screen appearance in "Road to Perdition." Such a great career, and he is missed...

Bull S**t. Paul always did it better than anyone in his generation. His legacy is his films.

I have never been a defender of Brando, but calling him a "poseur" makes you look like an absolute idiot.

The most ironic thing here is that Newman was harshly criticized in his early years for striving too hard to be like Brando.

Newman was my favorite actor. Although I don't think he was the most talented actor I've seen. I looked at several YouTube tributes to Newman after he died & at the end of one of them it just said "A life well lived".

Boy do I agree with that!

Paul delivers a fine performance as usual here, but considering his excellent filmography ("Hud," "The Verdict" and "The Sting" come to mind immediately), I'd say this is one of his lesser roles simply because he set the bar so incredibly high.

Hud

reply

Nobody's Fool along with HUD, The Verdict, The Sting, Hombre, Somebody Up There Likes Me ect are very good. He has many so I can't pick just few.

reply

Certainly one of his best performances - but there's also his work in films like Hud or The Verdict perhaps above all...
