Island?

So the island is undeveloped. But, there is a hotel in the middle of the island....But only the hotel. No ancillary buildings. No roads. No airport. How did anyone ever get there in the first place?

Also, how did the Insiders get all that bamboo for the armor? Bamboo is definately not found on that island.

Just some questions that crossed my mind while I was watching on HBO tonight.

reply

...Hotel? Oh..do you mean the building in Marriks camp?
You know...that's a good question.
:O)

It's possible that the warden had the place built long before, maybe as an earlier version of his 'prison island'.
But that's just a guess.

As for the bamboo...i think it does grow there.
The island looked like (or possible was) Hawaii, and bamboo definatly
grows in Hawaii. The island looked similar in climate and environment to that of Hawaii, so i think it can be assumed that there were bamboo plants.

It's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.

You're right about the Bamboo.

I didn't put alot of thought into that....I guess because I didn't see any bamboo forests or plants, It just grabbed my attention.

The hotel looks to be much older than the warden. More like ruins. But it seems to be built like its a resort just REALLY old.

reply

Yeah, you're right...that building did lookpretty old.

Ok..let's see...

How about this?
Ok, the movie takes place in 2022, or something like that, right?
So let's say that the island was inhabited, but used solely as
some private resort for the rich...back in the 1980s. The original proprieters have died, or the hotel went bankrupt or something...the island is for sale.

It stays on the market...maybe looked over by the Jurassic Park lawyers, but ultimatly deemed 'not dinosaur worthy'. So it never sells...until, say 2010 or so, when a plucky young warden, fresh full of (evil) ideas comes into power.

His family was independantly wealthy, so he bought the island in cash, under a false name. Then he began the process of bringing his plan to life.

Thinking the decreped hotel a perfect landmark for his twisted dream, he left it sitting there without changing a thing.

How's that?
:O)

I like the Jurassic Park part....

The warden doesn't own the island as far as I thought. Its just part of the prison system (kind of like Escape from New York).

I'm still not sold on why there were no roads and there is JUST a main building and a pool and some statues.

reply

:O)

Well...it is possible that the roads deteriorated faster than the buildings.
(God knows...the roads in Chicago certainly do!)

It's possible the old roads were not much more than a cleared-out trail.
*shrug*

Now, about the island though...i'm wondering how "secret" that island was.

I guess you're right...it wouldnt make much sense if the Warden owned the island. But it would be easier to keep secret if it was privately owned.

It could be known, but not by many...and it could be known to exist, but not that it's being used to store prisoners.

...did they ever explain why the Warden wanted the island to be a secret?
It seems (like in Escape from New York) that it would have been an acceptable place to house the lifers. again...*shrug*

My guess is that he did not people trying to break them out or sneaking them other contraband...

The island was only 200 miles (I think) off shore and that does not seem that remote anyway. Its the story line in the script, but I guess that you could not keep an island that close to the shore and major population a secret.

reply

Oh yeah...good point.
I didnt think about people trying to break-out prisoners, or sneaking food and stuff to them.
