Under Rated

Great story line with a well thought out casting

Agreed. Under rated and overlooked.

Heck yeah! I'm no fan of Ray Liotta....but this movie was bomb. How the hell isn't this shown on cable more often???

i was 14ish when this movie came out. I loved it. It is one of those movies I watched over and over. I didn't think it was a brilliant film or anything, just really cool and fun.

Same here and I was 30 when it came out.

Cool.

Totally agree. Interesting concept, well-cast and well-acted. I can never find this movie on TV anymore.

I thoroughly enjoyed this popcorn flick when I saw it in the theater back in '94 (can't believe it was that long ago). My girlfriend-at-the-time even liked it a lot. Don't think it did that well, and I'll never get why. Saw a good "the making of" type behind the scenes short about it on a cable channel just before we went to see it. They had a hell of a time making it due mainly to really crappy weather. Maybe it's been discussed on other threads. BUT, I thought it turned out great and would easily rate it an 8 or 9.

I haven't seen it in years, so I can't get the best analysis, but I always remember finding it to be a pretty good action flick. Stewart Wilson was both hilarious and sadistic. Great villains.

I haven't seen it in a while as well. Probably 14 years old when I did. I remember the trailer for it on a vhs, and thought, hey that Ray Liotta from Goodfellas, looks alittle corny but alright. And then a few days later it was in the $5 dvd bin at Wal-Mart. (Those $5 dvd bins are magic chests, I swear)

I've seen it twice, and I say it's enjoyable, corny, and fairly unoriginal in it's content. I guess Richard Herley's novel was good, I haven't read it. It's a good concept, with a nice cast, and some decent performances, but seems like it was lacking in the actual script and direction as well.

I am Jack's cold sweat.

Extremely underrated, on par with Waterworld. 6.0 is a ridiculous score for this flick.

🐺 Boycott movies that involve real animal violence (& their directors) 🐾

reply

Totally agree, 6.0 is very harsh on this. Seen it so many times over the years and always enjoyed Liotta's tough guy and Stuart Wilson's hilarious OTT villain Marek.

Yes it is a B movie, the effects aren't great and it's riddled with prison movie clichés like the mothering elder (King, who also turns out to be the traitor), the sadistic warden, the father figure, the scrounger, the moonshine maker, the impressionable youth and the inventor/engineer (who was seemingly capable of building stealth boats out of wood and old junk) but who cares.

It's a blast to watch. Glad I bought it on DVD all those years ago. Yet if it appears on TV I will usually tune in anyway.

It's not cool that the title was stolen for a Pierce Brosnan flick coming this summer.

As far as futuristic movies that are a combination of science fiction and prison go I think this movie is much better than ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and it's sequel ESCAPE FROM LA yet those movies were much more successful.

A sequel to this would have been interesting.
