Stuart Wilson - Merek.

Never heard of this guy before but after seeing this he should be starring in more films as a bad guy as he was the best thing in this film.

And he's quite handsome too!
I've seen him in several movies, he tends to play the villain in most of them. What a guy!

He was very good in his recent role in Hot Fuzz and he was also great in Lethal Weapon III (he has a convincing North American accent despite being English).

Yea, totally agree. He had this great aura of charisma despite having "gone native" so to speak. One of my favorite scenes was right after he dumped the heads of the leaders from the other "tribes" and briefly looses his charming facade: " I really want to be in charge... okay?" Such awesome delivery. I almost wish they had filmed a scene showing Merek betraying the other leaders and dispatching of them. Would have shown his ruthlessness a tad bit more imho.

As an aside, had he not been arrested/banished/whatever, I think the character of Merek would have made an excellent warden of that prison island. He just had that perfect instinct and cold-blooded judgement though perhaps that was developed or blossomed after he was put away. Random thought, I know.

How do you all misspell the name when it's written right there on the page where you're discussing it?

Nevertheless, I agree - great character, superb actor. Truly memorable in a vastly underrated film.

reply

Completely agree! He was great in this movie!

Prostitute: What the *beep* are you doing?
Johnny: I'm gonna kill a bunch of people.

reply

He's brilliant in this film.

I feel the casting was perfect. Going about 7 or 8 deep.

Creasy: Okay, my friend. It's off to the next life for you. I guarantee you, you won't be lonely..

Great actor. Great performance

He also played Sigourney Weaver's husband in Polanski's 'Death And The Maiden'and i was kind of shocked to recognize him as villain in this film. Like all great character actors he has variety and disappears to the roles so he's hard to spot from one film to the next!

reply

I never heard of him before this movie either, but have definitely seem him in other stuff since. He's a good villain in Zorro and Lethal Weapon 3 as well.

He has just turned six weeks old.
