Did anyone else think that having the Rockmonster sing a 70s pop song - "Born to be Wild" - was a TOTALLY lame idea???
How would a creature froma fantasy world be familiar with Earth pop hits?! It just seemed like a cheesy musical cash-in; y'know, plonk any old song in a movie to sell more records.
Totally crass gimmick.
Die Gerdanken Sind Frei (My Thoughts Are Free) - a WWII protest song
it was propbably one of the most stupid things ive ever seen in a movie, it was so bad , u laugh at the stupidity, then u start crying of shame that people actually allowed this nonsense crap on video or on tv.*sigh*
Yup, when the music started I was like "oh god, please don't start singing even though I know you will..." and unfortunately I was right. And it just kept going and going.
The irony is almost beautiful, you have to admit. Two movies of "omg we're dying because no one reads anymore or has respect for the written word" just to end up with studio execs going, "uh oh, better put in some pop culture references or we'll lose the target audience!"
Oh god, I only saw this movie once (when it first came out), and I STILL have that terrible memory of him singing that stupid song. Even as a kid I was embarrassed by that scene.
Wait, wait, did the Rockmonster sing the song or did they just play the original song from Steppenwolf? I saw the movie years ago but it was so atrocious that I blocked most of it from my memory.
Steppenwolf song was cool and a classic, the thought of the Rockmonster singing it makes me want to stab out my eardrums. :P
I haven't seen this film past this point. I rented the movie when it was released and as soon as the Rockbiter started singing, I switched it off. Yes, even as an 11-year-old I had my limits and listening to him sing pushed me to it.
I adored the first film, it was the first video I ever had and it was watched over and over until it rolled continuously. I liked the second film, never brought it, but thought it was kinda cool. But I just can't watch the third without wanting to put pins in my eyes!
Having said that though I am apparently missing out on Jack Black - so maybe I should grit my teeth just to watch his scenes...
"Having said that though I am apparently missing out on Jack Black - so maybe I should grit my teeth just to watch his scenes..."
No. NO! It really isn't worth it, he takes it so seriously that I really feel sorry for the guy to be in such dreck, the same with Freddie Jones, a really great actor. These two are not reason to watch it as A). Freedie Jones is hardly in it and B). Jack Balck's scenes are some of the worst because the Nasties are such bad characters/
Except Yoda singing Yellow Submarine would at least be funny.
I'm not even sure what the rockmonster singing was suppose to accomplish. Were the youth in 1994 suppose to closely identify with Steppenwolf and want to buy the soundtrack? The song is so superfluous to the plot you would think they would at least buy the rights to a song the target audience would be familiar with.
Rockmonster singing Rock Lobster might have made this movie good.
