The Hostage In The Motel Room

Anyone else think this is a very disturbing, unnerving sequence? I can't help but be creeped out every time I watch the film and this scene comes. The violence and gore doesn't bother me at all and I've even seen footage of real violence that didn't phase me but this scene is just so disturbing and perverse to me.

Yeah and also his maniacal grin he kept giving her. It's like he was trying to say to her "you're next."

scenes like that one are why this film dosent work completly it trys to have it both ways an be a serious movie but a cartoon at the same time its not horrible but the tone is the weakest part an the ending escape is down right retarded the moment they got out of the prison a swat team would have snipered them an blown there heads off lol how much you like this film will be if you can over look the problems for the performances as a film its descent but its a weaker film from oliver

I actually think more disturbing moments like the hostage in the motel worked, as it balanced out the more stylized violence to show the ugly reality of things like killing and rape. The violence throughout is stylized to be reflected of how the mass media portrays it while downplaying how truly destructive it is.

reply

i get what your saying but you can only stylize so much an in so many ways an alot just diddnt fit the film at times it would feeling like a music video at points it works for most of the film but the prison escape is a prime example of just way to over the top this film would have worked better without a big fantasy over the top ending at times it feels the director is out of his element a little its not a bad film but feels like it needed to be directed by someone totally different i hate to say it but tarentino would have been a better pic for this film

I still find the bit with the bullet stopping right before the waitress at the beginning with the cartoon soundtrack to be so hilarious 

reply

lol yes i agree the film was very funny at times all most to funny honestly in the escape from prison i was laughing my ass off at robert downey jr

reply

He was hilarious throughout much of the movie for sure.

I can't even figure out what you're saying. Your (lack of) writing skills is appalling.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

Also I remember reading an interview with the actress who played the hostage, wonder if anyone still has the link? I recall it was taken from an old newspaper and was called something like A Woman Of Contradictions.

reply

Yes, OP...extremely disturbing. I watched the movie 2 or 3 times back when it first came out, never really liking it but trying to understand why my friends lived it so much.

So I just saw it was on tv, just now...and I thought, violence doesn't affect me now like it used to...maybe I'll see how I feel about it now.

That scene...the way Mickey looks at that hostage...made me switch to an old rerun of Married with Children. Nope. I can't find that entertaining. I do not find his character sympathetic at all.

reply

While I feel bad for the abuse Mickey endured and suffered as a child, the scenes that really make it hard to be sympathetic to him for me were the hostage scene and also near the end when he's taping the shotgun to Duncan Homolka when the latter is crying and begging not to die. The hostage scene especially.

i never got the idea the movie wanted us to feel sorry for him just understand why he is how he is an the abuse is why but no i never felt sorry for him i couldnt take this movie serious enough to feel any sympathy for any one honestly this felt like a dark comedy i couldnt stop laughing even when the movie tried to make me feel sorry for someone i was to busy laughing its an un even movie its good but not great an struggles with its tone an how far to push it it kinda felt like the director was out of his element a bit its just hard for me to care about any one here when its a live action cartoon i laughed at all most everything in this movie even the hostage scene i was like well kinda disturbing but left me with nothing cause it was over so quick i diddnt really see anything to be honest hell i have seen worse stuff then that in pg 13 films lol at least now a days also its hard for me to get into this movie i dont care about any one because no body is real there all cartoons an i cant get to into the action because its more in line with fantasy especially the ending were in no way would they have broken out of prison an gotten away but at the same time its a good movie just not great i liked both wall street movies better

Here's the interview with the actress I managaed to find after some digging. Fair warning it's on a bondage fetish site and might be NSFW: http://ralphus.net/special/corrina_laszlo_interview.html.

It's fascinating stuff to read. Apparently this scene was the first in the movie to be filmed.
