So did Martin really see...

The first dead prostitute's body and blood trail outside of the room where they kept the bodies?
It could either be a trick by Wörmer to drive Martin mad, or it really was his imagination. If it was Wörmer's doing, how did he create the blood trail? Did he bring his own bucket of blood? And how did he clean up so fast?

Your thoughts?

Oh, 2 more things:

Did the previous watchman ever explain why he quit? Do you think it had something to do with the story?

What was the ending all about? After they survived the killer, the first thing you see is Martin who lies in bed and says it's raining. Kalinka tells him it's just the shower (but to me it did sound more like rain). It gave me this creepy feeling that he was delusional.
In the next scene they're sitting in church... for the super-happy-sappy Daktari-ending. They're getting married, they're heroes and everybody laughs about something silly.
Something told me nothing of that was true. It couldn't be so happy, it didn't fit the movie.
So is there a deeper meaning of the ending that I (partially) missed?

I think we are meant to believe that Wormer actually did that to drive him crazy...however plausible or implausible that may sound would depend on the viewer. But at the same time I think it works the nerves in such a way that it helps the film fit in more with the horror genre, and it may be taken as creepy, maddening delusion.

As for the ending in the church, I think it really happened. Part of the movie seemed to be a commentary on "bad" American movies, so this happy ending fits in that regard.

I guess that's just a bad translation, but I don't know what the scene is supposed to mean either.

Can see this is an old thread but I just saw the movie (no subs) and want to point out that the translation was at least close but an easy one to mix up (depending on what they actually wrote in English... which I can't see).

She says what equates to "it's just a shower" (like light showers, or a rain shower that will pass over) not the shower.

So that scene is just the way it seems. He says it's raining and she replies that it's just a (rain) shower.

Hope that helps if anyone is still interested :).
