LOST RESPECT FOR RALPH

I was always a huge fan of Ralph Macchio but after I saw him kiss Eric Stoltz in this movie I turned the movie off..........just terrible!

reply

You lost respect for a talented actor who took a huge risk? That makes no sense. In that scene, Macchio and Stoltz accurately portrayed the conflicting emotions people sometimes feel.

reply

I lost respect for him since he hasn't been in a good movie since Karate Kid 2. Oh and he kissed a guy.

reply

No disputing Macchio is a talented actor, in my opinion he is underrated due to being stereotyped as nothing more than the Karate Kid, but I don't have any interest in seeing a man kiss another man ever!!!!!

reply

What is this, the homophobic philistine thread?

reply

Spoken like a true heterophobe.
Congratulations, a$$wipe.

reply

I was indifferent to Ralph until I saw this movie. I never saw a Karate Kid movie and really only remember him from Eight is Enough. I actually gained respect for him because of this role. The person that started this thread is a pinhead.

Amen! blackurge9 - I would like to say something worse but I HAVE more respect than that!!

An excerpt of an article from Washington Post on how Ralph Macchio commented on racy adult roles:

CELEBRITOLOGY by Liz Kelly: Catching up with Ralph Macchio

.... Liz: Any advice for younger actors today looking to transition into more adult roles -- for instance Dakota Fanning ("Hounddog") and Daniel Radcliffe ("Harry Potter"), who have recently taken some heat for some racier choices?

RM: It's a tough transition. I can vouch; but keep moving and don't give up. Always have to reinvent, whether as an actor or director. Sometimes I do find a drastic racy choice could backfire as just trying to make noise. Bottom line: It's always about the quality of material at the end of the day.

Bad career move. Just wish he'd gone on for a more heavyweight role, like he once did as Johnny Cade in the "The Outsiders".

Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.

reply

Do you even have a reason besides obviously not being a fan of the show of gay affection? A good actor will rise to the occasion and take risks and sometimes try things that may or may not be in their *comfort zone*. Somebody mentioned it being a bad career move? wasnt a bad career move for Heath Ledger or Jake Gylenhall (sp?). and no disrespect to Ralph, but, the late Pat Morita CARRIED the Karate Kid films. they were not exactly intellectually stimulating films.

Anyway, whatever..... great movie. Would expect nothing less of Scorcese.

reply

I was just happy to see him in another role somewhere. Go Ralph! Oh, and anything with Mary-Louise Parker in it is worth watching. She looked great in this movie!

reply

Dude he is playing a role, it's not like they did a gay porn.

I kinda liked that moment, thought it was well done. I liked the way Jake (Stoltz) reacted: kind of not quite on top of the fact that this was really happening, and almost kind of going with it--in any case, not pulling away violently or freaking out. It seemed right for his character, and for Macchio's. One of many moments and things I liked in this not overall successful movie. For me, a movie can have some real problems, but still be worth watching and even enjoying for numerous elements. That was certainly the case with this one.
