PLOT HOLES from My Girl

Okay, this is a very small thing, but it's always bugged me.

#1, in the first My Girl, Harry tell his brother that he hasn't been on a date in "20 years". And we don't think much of it because hey, maybe Harry and his wife had been married a long time before Vada came along. so, ok.
But THEN in My Girl 2, we learn that Harry and his wife had a "whirlwind romance" and harry "proposed on the 2nd date, we were married two weeks later, almost 9 months later you came along, and then she was gone"
SO: at the very LEAST it had been 11 years since his last date.

#2, in the first My Girl, Vada and Thomas J. finds a picture of Vada's mother and Harry. in the photo Vada's mother has long brown hair. But in the end of My Girl 2, and Vada is watching the old home movies of her mother, she has short platinum blonde hair. I know that the movies are from before harry met vada's mother. but they were around the same time because the guy that vada thinks may be her real father tells her about how vada's mother wanted to BE a mother, and he didn't. And how then she met harry and they clicked instantly.

any thoughts on these little oversights??

Those aren't plotholes.

1. He is exaggerating. He didn't sit out and count how many years it was from his last date.

2. The picture was seen about 5 seconds. The producers didn't think it was a big deal to show a different woman in a second movie. Plus, hey, her mom did want to be an actress. Maybe she was going for the Marilyn look later on.

I think people who look for plotholes in any movie or book are overanalzing things.

It's a movie; watch it.

"the guy that vada thinks may be her real father tells her about how vada's mother wanted to BE a mother, and he didn't"

the post starter put that & i just was reading it & i cought. that... he CANT be a mother. & those prob wernt the quoted lines

well, they were in theater/film. maybe someone had a camera that wasn't for the general public...

reply

yeah, i know he's exaggerating. i figured that. it just bugs me that's all.

and the pic is more than 5 seconds. they show it twice once when they find it, and once at the end when she shows it to her father. maybe it's because i own both flicks and i've seen them more than a few times.

and it's not that it's a different woman/actress. i didn't expect them to go find the person they used in the fake photo.

the marilyn look was RIGHT before she met harry...the look with the blond short hair. ((when she was dating the hippy bearded cabin guy))

harry says that they met, he proposed on the second date, and nine months later she was gone. just find it hard to believe that her hair grew like 8 inches in that amount of time.

overanalyzing. yes. i've been told this before. but i truly enjoy a movie when it suspends my disbelief (science fiction and fantasy non-withstanding..you just accept those for what they are)

i just cant help it. when i see something that just does NOT make sense, whether it's a time line, etc. i just fester on it.

im not some lame-o that thinks movies are REAL. i just have certain requirements! lol.

No shame in that!

"just find it hard to believe that her hair grew like 8 inches in that amount of time."

She didn't have short blond hair in the home movies. She had blond hair up in a bun for 99 percent of the time, and it was long while floating in the water.

Do you think they actually expected to make a sequel when they filmed the first movie? Personally, I'm glad they gave her that classic Hollywood look ..she WAS trying to be a star. People did dye their hair back then. There really isn't anything that "doesn't make sense" when it comes to a god damn photograph.

Yeah, people dyed their hair a lot back then. My grandmother went from long platinum blond to short dark hair, back to blond a lot. That's when hair dying was being revolutionized. But yeah, the camera thing is messed up. I was watching a family video of my dad's when he was little in the 60s, and there was NO sound.

Or it could have been a wig.

DecoLady - I agree with your first point, though Harry WAS very nervous when he was getting dressed for his date and when people are nervous, they don't usually make much sense. I know I don't when I'm nervous. Anyway.

Second point - I'm guessing she dyed her hair brown so no one could remember her / her first husband wouldn't recognize her if she left town. Not many people dyed their hair back then, so it was considered a pretty drastic change. Also, it was the 50's, and I read somewhere that "only whores bleached their hair blond [like Marilyn Monroe]". I'm guessing not many women were fond of MM, haha.

I'm not psycho, just a little loopy.

The picture thing's bothered me for years....I mean it doesn't make me crazy or ruin either movie for me, but it is very noticeable to me.

To me, it's a careless oversight on the part of the filmmaker.

No plot holes.

1. He is exaggerating. Also, technically, maybe he hadn't been on a FORMAL date since before Vada's mom. It's possible they never had a traditional date together.

2. It's possible she frequently cut/dyed her hair? I'm pretty sure dyeing was beginning to get popular in the late 60s/early 70s.
