Piercing the ears was expensive even back then

I guess the movie took place in the 1970's or 1980's. When Vada and her friend are walking down the street past the ear piercing place, there is a sign in the window that says "Ear piercings, five dollars, earrings included." Wow. Today, you can go to Wal-Mart and get your ears pierced for free, as long as you buy the earrings which you can get for around ten dollars. My point being- that perhaps back then the price should have been a little cheaper since that was about thirty years ago.

I agree that the film should have considered inflation a bit more but I always figured the high price could be attributed to the fact they were walking around a touristy area in California.

Probably so, because it looked like they were walking down Hollywood Blvd.

The $5.00 probably covered the cost of the earrings and the actual piercing was free. That was about the usual cost back then (1974). I was in high school and a lot of the girls I knew got their ears pierced and they all said it cost about $5.00, including the small stud earrings. You didn't have WalMarts all over the place (fortunately) and most places that did the piercings didn't make much on them. WalMart uses the free piercings as a "loss leader" to get people into the stores. They make it up on all the other crap people buy.

Five dollars in 1980 was equal to $14 in 2012 dollars.

Life is pain. Anyone who says differently is selling something.
