The "I'm Not Nothing Scene" in the Bar Brings Tears to My Eyes Everytime

Anyone else get upset when they watch the scene in the bar with Tania's groupies telling Muriel they don't want her around anymore? Obviously that's what they were going for, but I mean even in comparison to similar scenes in other movies, I have always found this scene very disturbing. This is a movie with a bunch of sad scenes in it, but this particular one stands out to me. I also love how they contrasted Muriel's tears with Tania's to drive home the point. Excellent acting from Toni Collette and Sophie Lee makes it even more effective.

Oh man I cried in that scene! So well acted. And also I was a bit of a ''loser'' like Muriel growing up, so I think I identified with it a bit too much haha.

reply

not upset but very annoyed. what selfish bitches. it's always about them, every time muriel had something to get upset about because of their behaviour (like with the bouquet at the beginning) and they blame he. she was never even good enough to be allowed to be legitimately upset

reply

Yes, but it makes me feel so good that it was a happy ending for Muriel in the end, and that she got the happiness she deserved, while the nasty girls got the ending they deserved.

Toni Collette is a brilliant actress.
I wish she was being offers roles that better display her talents.

collette has carved out herself a pretty decent career in hollywood and has been in several films that has alot of oscar buzz about it so i don't know what you mean.

Not in a mean spirited way, but I couldn't help laughing at her raucous blubbering, it was sadly funny.

Another thing that always tickles me in this is the young businessman sitting next to Mariel at the restaurant when she meets her father in Sydney. Next time you watch it don't look at her, look at him as he squirms.

Also, the great Bill Hunter's stern flat orange face as he's walking her down the aisle. Too funny!

...then whoa, differences...

reply

I agree completely. The way she starts crying loudly like a child would is absolutely heartbreaking. It also enrages me, because, as the viewer, I wish Muriel just knew she was too good for that pack of b!tches.

SPOILER:

I remember the scene you're talking about.
For me, it did not make me cry, but it made me feel very sad for Muriel.

Muriel so wanted to be accepted by the "cool" group of gals, but after that scene, she should have known that they would never want Muriel in their little clique.
And yet...Muriel gets married and who does she ask to be bridesmaids?....the catty mean girls!...Ugh😒!

It is very sad when Muriel cries, but I wonder if it is supposed to be funny too?. It is a dark comedy, so maybe it was intentional?.

I felt sorry for Muriel too. I have been in that situation myself. It's horrible. I have Asperger's Syndrome, and got bullied a lot when I was younger. I also like 80's music, and I was born in the 80's, just like Muriel was born on the 70's and listens to 70's music. I wasn't bullied about my taste in music though. I was bullied because of my appearance and finding it hard to socialise. It's still hard to deal with my Asperger's Syndrome now sometimes.

I would feel bad if I seen that in real life. But it's a movie , laugh alittle , be happy be positive ! :D

reply

It was very sad and then immediately turned hysterically funny when she was sobbing into the camera and then it just cut to another scene. That was obviously supposed to be funny.

reply

Yeah, I found it funny, but obviously if I actually saw something like this happening for real, my heart would break for the person. I think what makes it funny is how callous they react to her crying. It's strange how much I enjoyed this movie considering my father is exactly like Muriel's. I at times feel like Muriel and find 'escapes' like she does with ABBA and planning for her wedding. But I know they are only temporary and that I need to focus on the people and things in my life that make me happy, just like Muriel learned in the end.

Wildcattin'...Wildcattin'. Pow! I'm gonna go.

I wouldn't . Call me heartless or whateva . Ppl should learn to grow a pair of balls and stop crying . Ppl spend too much time cooped up it makes them depressed . Tell em to grow some balls and say the hell w it . Nothing bothers me . Maybe if ppl had some balls n stop letting everything bother them they wouldn't feel so bad /sad . Curse alittle bit . Maybe if they expressed their anger n cursed ppl out who need to be cursed out they'd feel relieved . Get shizitttt off your chest n stop cryin like a loser ain't nobody gonna feel bad

reply

Why does that bother you? You're from "Brooklyn". Curse a little bit. Grow some balls. Don't be mad, "boo". (I hear "boo" is an American term so I'm hazarding a guess you use it though I'm assuming you don't know how to spell it).
