Lord! She was ugly!!

I just finished watching the whole of United States of Tara and I have been aware of Toni since this movie and Sixth Sense and all I can say is "damn, I wish someone would discover my ugly mug (not too unlike Toni's) and make me into a model or actress to earn millions like her!!!
Yes, I know, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

She definitely has a unique look that can swing between ugly and attractive. Her current weight helps out a lot as compared to Muriel's weight. She looked passable in the wedding scene but she made sure Muriel came out with that awful smiling mannerism.

reply

Very true!
I wish someone would discover my "ugly" (comparable to Toni, Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow, etc.) mug and teach me to be an actress. I could use a few million.

reply

Gwyneth Paltrow is universally attractive.

reply

""""Gwyneth Paltrow is universally attractive.""""""

No she isn't.

Only those with no valid argument pick holes in people's spelling and grammar. 

reply

You're right. There are people who aren't attracted to pretty women. My bad.

reply

Eh..I never got this.

reply

She is thin, white and blonde. Therefore, she has it all.

reply

I think they intentionally made her look worse in the begining so that they could show a bit of a transformation as the movie progressed. Everyone looks fugly if you make them gain 40 lbs in a matter of weeks and highlight their worst features. I don't think she's inherently ugly.

reply

What a catty bunch on this thread. A lot of actresses (and actors) tend to be
less than "conventionally" beautiful, and use their distinctive looks and flaws
to add to their acting skills. And Toni Collette probably looks her best in this
film; the lingering shot of her face at the end of the film, when she's sitting in the car as it leaves Porpoise Spit, conveys so much hope and happiness at the end
of such a sad story that it's exquisite.
Or do you harpies just assume that someone who's a little overweight is automatically a target for nasty remarks?

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

Hewwo.

reply

You're kidding, right? She looks like a regular person. She is very average looking, but when her makeup is done properly, I think she is very pretty. I'd like to see how you'd look if you gained 40lbs and walked around with little to no makeup on.

reply

Calling myself and others with similar looks ugly is far from being catty.

reply

Bitching about another womans looks is definitely being 'catty'!

Ashmi any question

She is so beautiful. Her eyes. Her smile lights up the world. Voluptuous body. She is a total delight.

reply

I think she is quite pretty. She might have a jacked up grill, but aside from that she is pretty.

reply

She wasn't ugly at all.

"She wasn't ugly at all."

Same here. In some of the earlier scenes she was definitely on the frumpy side and her skin looked bad but that what her character is supposed to look like, poor diet, self esteem in negative territory, self absorbed, socially awkward to the point of cringe worthy --- it all takes its toll.

No one looks good when they are trying too hard to act and dress like someone they are not.

You could see her self confidence grow at the end where she was more comfortable in her own skin and able relax and enjoy herself.

Lots of women who are on the heavier, "zaftig" side get put down so much I can't believe. If they can't fit into a size 4 they are miserable creatures who nobody wants when most of us like her in many ways.

You have the top 5 or 10 percent who "pass" and are grudgingly tolerated and the rest of us are treated like eyesores.

reply

She really glowed when she found herself. I don't think she was ever ugly, that's completely unfair, she just wasn't confident in Porpoise Spit. But by the end, when she found her footing with Rhonda and left David, she was absolutely gorgeous.
