who was the actress in bed with Charles MacArthur

Who was the actress that Dorothy finds in MacArthur's apartment--is that supposed to be Helen Hayes? Or was he a womanizer.

reply

You mean when she shows up unannounced and finds the half-naked woman in his bed? That's Gwyneth Paltrow's character...if you remember, later on D.P. steals away the psychiatrist at a party while he is talking to Paltrow's character (sorry, blanking on her name & too lazy to look it up) and says to her, "Do you mind?...Well, at least I asked first." Hope it helps!

The character's name is Paula, and I don't think she's meant to be any historical person in particular.

As stated by the director in the commentary on the DVD, Gwyenth's character is not a particular person - she's a combination of several actresses of the time - particularly Tallulah Bankhead and Claire Luce Booth.

Ive often wondered if her character "Paula Hunt" was based on the real life Claire Luce Booth with whom Parker had many run ins with, resulting in some of her best jabs.

Once when leaving a hotel Booth stopped and held the door open for Parker and said, "Age before beauty my dear". To which Parker replied while stepping through, "Yes, and pearls before swine!"

MacArthur was a womanizer. He was the father of the child that Dorothy Parker aborted, which is referenced in the documentary, The Ten Year Lunch. Helen Hayes was very Catholic, so MacArthur cheated on her frequently while Hayes, evidently, looked the other way. I remember that they had a handicapped child of some sort and she focused her energies on the child and on her acting career.
I expect she breathed a sigh of relief when MacArthur died and left her a widow.

Never, ever judge a marriage about which you know next to nothing. Charlie loved Helen and she adored him - the death of his adolescent daughter from polio devastated him - they say he never completely recovered his natural joyfulness after that. Their son James was a real gentleman - and though a Disney Teen Hunk (star of Swiss Family Robinson and Spencer's Mountain) went on to have a 40 year career of steady competent acting work. Those who knew James said he combined the best of his parent's qualities.

reply

To reinforce the womanizer theory, James Macarthur's mother was not Helen Hayes; he was the product of one of Charles Macarthur's affairs. Helen adopted him and raised him.

But, man he had a lot of other noble traits - his friends (who were many) loved him too.
